I finally went to the canal this morning - a west end location that had some schoolies slapping at baitfish around an hour before sunup, but no one was fishing except for me briefly and another guy that appeared to be a regular. I got hung up once, was using a 70's fiberglass pole that I have never used before. I am a total rookie there and felt like it. Left after about 30 minutes of small fish slashing at bait within casting range and not getting a hit. Parking area started to fill, so I figured I'd hit a schoolie spot to make me feel like I had a clue (no dice there either). Came back later in the morning and spoke with the same gentleman that was nice enough to answer a few questions I had when I first arrived - very slow there all morning.

Seemed like everyone knew each other there - fishing must have been slow as there were only 4 guys fishing when I returned and 2-3X that number chatting it up in the lot.

Ya, I wished fishing will be good next time.
The starfish was one of the biggest ones I've pulled out of there, must have been a foot across. Do starfish count ?

Slipknot 09-17-2006 07:58 PM

Headed there right now, I'm optimistic.

Hooking a big starfish can really give you a workout. I nailed one near the herring run and a crowd of tourists was on the access road. They though I had a whale! Once landing the staarfish, I threw it up on the path for them to admire. Some had never seen a starfish up-close and real. I often wonder if one of them took it on the buss.

typical night, average, nothing special
current was way slow though, tricky hooking up with jig.

So............., where were you Michael P ? We kept expecting you to show at any moment.

Mike P 09-18-2006 11:14 AM

I was out until 4 AM Sunday.

Fred the bird hasn't shown up yet, so I kind of didn't fight falling asleep during the football highlights.

Diggin Jiggin 09-18-2006 11:24 AM

You guys gotta use your lights more so I can tell the score from across the way:hihi:

JPowers 09-18-2006 11:26 AM

:soon:

Yep. We also noticed/discussed Fred's absence ( Slip thinks he might be dead ).

BTW, turtles were bothering our jigs last night - ask Slip.

Slipknot 09-18-2006 11:33 AM

those darn turtles:gf: :whackin: they thought my jig was a lillypad

Dave, I saw YOUR light :eyes:

Mike P 09-18-2006 11:47 AM

Hmmm, turtles. I've seen the current running slower than this in the last month:

Slack, Ebb Begins (-.05 knots) 7:44 pm
Max Ebb (-4.12 knots) 10:40 pm

Last set of neap tides it was down to close to 3 kts.

Diggin Jiggin 09-18-2006 11:50 AM

:bl: ya you did.

I released a nice fish and it swam out 8 -10 feet from shore and rolled over, then I had to play snag and revive the fish in waist deep water. I got wet, but eventually it swam away strong.

CanalGuy 09-18-2006 11:47 PM

The canal is picking up two keepas 36" and 39" on chunks. This a.m. on the west turn down the west end. Skinny bastards though. Where's the Beef? :musc: ANyone been trying that other end the east? I struggle to get myself up that way even though my biggest this year came off the beach up there. Just wonderin?
