Saltiga - spool support washer tweak
Had two nightmare nights of "wind knots". Think I've isolated the problem. Reel is leaving a small ( 1/16th") gap at the base of spool when it wraps.
Solution: Add spool support washers that came with the reel in order to raise the spool. Problem: Took the spool off the shaft - looked at where the support washers go. Looks a little dicey to me. The washers sit in a kinda dish below a couple of metal dodads with interior gaskets. So......................., Question: Anyone ever add the washers? Can you help a dope like me? Thanks. |
I don't know either Jim, have you gotten the manual translated yet?
|
Slip,
The manual ( with pics) only says this procedure CAN be done. It doesn't go into any detail about HOW. I'd screw around with it in the winter months, but I've got the heebie geebies about doin' it now.:conf: |
As an alternative to inserting the washers, I'm thinkin of rewrapping the spool altogether and filling in that gap at the spool base with the the backing. Then when wrapping on the Whiplash there will be no "canyon" for it to disappear into.
|
I thought you had a spare Saltiga laying around ;) :devil2:
|
Would have to go to Worcester to pick it up. Probably have the same "problem" anyway.
|
you might be able to get some info. from the customer care contact at admail@daiwa.com . They got back to me very quickly. worth a shot.

I'm not gonna be the guinea pig on this one for ya :hs: Not with Fred due to land any day now :D |
Mike,
I dig. That's what gives me the heebie geebies. When Fred shows............, I'd better have this solved or I'm gonna go over there and wring his scrawny neck. |
I'll let you borrow my Emblem ;)
Pretty sad when a $120 reel lays line better than a $800 one, isn't it. |
who the hell is fred.
|
Fred the Bird. Best harbinger of the fall run there is, next to bob_G's logs :D
|
Fred is an omen. Very reliable - mystical.

Buy a Van Stall.:bo:

They say that Fred is a lineal descendant of the bird that reached out and touched Eagle Gibbs :humpty:
Oh, JP bought a VS. I have two. And they're no bargains when it comes to laying line evenly, either :hs: |
in fred we trust...

" Buy a Van Stall " 9 guys fishing last night. 6 Saltigas being used - 5 of the 6 guys own or used to own VS. |
are the saltigas sealed like a VS? I had mine in the sand and submerged for the better part of 5 hrs sun night and fished it last night, couldn't even tell i had abused it the night before.
more abuse will be taking place tonight:musc: :wiggle: |
The Saltiga may be sealed, but the close tolerances between the spool and the rotor can cause sand jamming issues. It's more of a reel for the rocks.
There's a place in most anglers' arsenals for both reels, IMO. The Saltiga drag is about the best there is, and the innards are strong enough. |
I fished with 2 local guys last week in Montauk. We went down the south side a few points got way out an fished offa some rocks>In a good swell.every 10 mins or so u get knocked off. They Had been usin their Saltiga 4000 series reels for 2 yrs with no care other than some fresh water every now an then. They loved em.
They are a very fine tuned machine make a VS look like a 706.I think the power of the Saltiga is what put that jig into my noggin. I'm sold. Now if I could just catch a fish on mine.. |
What about the original question.
Anyone got any answers? I've got the thing apart and I'm looking at the damn spool washers with a magnifying glass right now in order to figure this out. :wall: |
:jump:
Ok - all set !!!!!! Geeze, it was simple. Can't believe I spent so damn much time friggin' with this thing. |
that's great Jim, now you're all set I bet. good to see you figured it out, I knew ya could. see you out there soon.
|
Did u have this problem all a long oir did it develope over time.If so why.Is it because u use the GT spool.?
|
NIB,
I've got no idea. |
Mine does the same thing--about a 1/16", maybe even 1/32", gap at the bottom. It hasn't caused me any problems yet.
I think we both have the standard 6000, not the GT. |
Ran into more Saltiga problems on the 'Hunk this past weekend. Had to set her aside and fall back on the VS... again. Going to make some calls to get it fixed tonight. After setting up hard, the reel now sticks at the top and bottom of the spool cycle. It's not a problem when reeling something fast like a pencil popper, but murder when slow needleing. :bc:
