Sunday 9:30 AM - ESPN. Story on Pat Tillman

If you have not read anything recent on Pat Tillman, the former NFL player that enlisted in the Army, made Rangers, and was killed by friendly fire in Afghanistan - watch it.

I've read a few articles on him, including a detailed one in SI a couple months ago. Worth reading.

Bump - this is on now

Sad...

I feel nothing but sadness for his family. The Army really screwed up the handling of his death. Having said that, does anyone know the names of any of the Marines killed by the A-10 on the road to Bagdhad? Didn't think so, they weren't professional athletes. If the soldier next to Tillman had been killed instead this wouldn't even be a story.

Fratricide has happened all throughout history and is usually caused by "the fog of war". Its easy to judge from the comfort of your living room or ESPN headquarters. Nobody is shooting at you there.
I hope his family finds peace.

Unfortunately absolutely true. Also sad that it takes someone with name recognition to lift the lid on something like this.

The Blue on Blue fratricide rate has increased as effectiveness of weapons has increased as well as the more conditions they can now be used. With more effective troops and systems fighting practically 24/7 in all kinds of conditions that would have stood down previous generations, the likelyhood of fraticide goes up.

The only time I was shot at (in anger) was in Mission Hill in Boston. There was no fog, it was get my ass in the car and go.
