A week or so ago CBGB's in the bowery closed. I spent a few hazy weekends in NY as a kid and CBGB's was where we always ended up. Richard Hell and the Voidoids, The Ramones in thier element, The Jim Carroll Band ( peopl who died is still a great tune) Iggy Pop, Wall of Voodoo and my personal fav show there, The New York Dolls. There was so much going on there it took you a week to sort out not only what you saw on the stage (three bands a night most nights) who was screwing who or what in the john, I would go outside in the alleys to piss, it was so gross no matter what I had ingested I could still rationalize that it was not prudent to even think about it. I was not going to take out anything or drop my pants in there but it was a hell of a place. Everything stunk and every thing was always sticky.
They should have carted the whole interior to the Smithsonian.:claps: |

Wow. I saw the Gorilla Biscutts and Sick of It All there one day and walked down the street and went to a show at Coney Island High. That was a great day. I can't believe CB's is gone but I think it's golden age was long ago...even before I went there. The nyc punk and hardcore movements of the 80's and early 90's definately centered around that place. I heard it may need to move but didn't realize it was closing. I remember when I first started college in Strong Island walking into shows there and looking over at the bar to see a row of guys sitting there that I had idolized growing up. Being there definately made you feel like your were a part of something. |
joey lives!!!!!!!

used to be a hoot when Howard would have them on Joey.. DeeDee.. they would really rip.. Howard and Joey would always goof on DeeDee, that Howard and Joey were really brothers.. |
I played drums at the Boston Club (paradise now),,the Rat ,,the Club in cambridge,,Beachcomber in Wollaston, 3 coppermen in Lowell,, White Sands in Manomet,, Caseys in Hull ,,did a showcase of new bands there. Cap N" Swing was one of them that night .. Later that year they changed thier name to the cars . Did a gig once with NRBQ ... remember them ? A bunch of other places don't even remember.. some down the cape .. 7th grade was the 1st time I played out in public until 22 .. It was great .. up all night ,,sleep all day . Playing in a band is a great way for an ugly guy to meet girls .A lot of self abuse can't mention ,,peeing in allies,,puking on your clothes . Spend all your money on your bar tab for the week . :err: lucky too live through it .Others have told me stories about myself .. like 10 yrs. there I don't remember . :boots:

an xfiles quote.....the one where the lone gunmen were killed.....
the gunman langly often wore a joey lives tshirt. This guy asks him who joey is......then tells him to get a real hero, he responds... Langly: You want to know why Joey Ramone's my hero? 'Cause people like you never managed to grind him down. They never stole his spirit. He never gave in, never gave up, and never sold out. Right till his last breath. And he's not dead. Guys like that, they live forever |

A buddy of mine was a huge Ramon fan...I went to a lot of Ramon shows. I probably saw The Ramons thirty times and every show was exactly the same except for intro. Now they're hailed as inovators - there has been more interest in them since the closing of CBGB's last week.
Joey Ramon: "Hey its really great to be back in ______ _____. Take it DeeDee." DeeDee Ramon: "One! Two!Three! Four!" BLAM, BLAM, BANG, BANG. Thirty two minute songs - a short break and thirty more. My ears are still ringing. |
