What do you use for bait? I haven't done it in many years but we used to use shrimp. What tide are they showing on?

niko 11-04-2006 10:45 AM

Anyone interested in a group outing in Late February/early march to catch a bunch of smelt?

Sluggoslinger 12-05-2006 04:05 PM

Tasty... it would make my old man's day

Where do you go then? Through the ice up in NH?

Are there any placese where you can rent Ice Shacks for smelt?

The Dad Fisherman 12-05-2006 04:06 PM

Went a few times last week...did OK on Friday, going out tonight after work for a few....hopefully

stripersnipr 12-05-2006 04:12 PM

Where are you planning to catch them?

The Dad Fisherman 12-05-2006 04:17 PM

Interested, yes. I'd like to hear more. Where, when, how much...Very interested.

let's go fish a tide in maine. i'm in

MakoMike 12-06-2006 08:12 AM

I was thinking about ME, maybe two tides, drive up an sat and fish the afternoon tide and then the morning tide on Sunday and then drive back. I also asked on Noreast, so if we get enough guys maybe we can charter a bus or something.

never have used hook and line ... when i was younger we'd use nets.

tasty little critters ... fry 'em up whole.

niko 12-06-2006 08:50 AM

mike sounds good. any reason we're waiting till late feb? i've done well in jan up there. just to elaborate for those who havn't been to a smelt camp - when the estuaries in maine freeze up you can rent little shacks on the ice and clean up on smelt, if you get lucky. you get the shack for short money and fish a "tide", incoming/outgoing. it's a fun way to spend some time fishing in the middle of the winter.

The Night time is the Right time for smelts, plan your tide so it is dark when you go up to Maine.

James Eddy is a good camp up there. I think its $14 a tide for a shack

Niko,
Yep, there is a real good reason, I can't go in January or early February! :)

niko 12-06-2006 12:42 PM

i hope it's a warm and sandy reason

Rockport24 12-06-2006 01:14 PM

do you catch em' from shore in the salt?

niko 12-06-2006 02:15 PM

in maine in the winter it's basicly ice fishing. at this time of year your local piers should be holding right now.
