How Big Is Your Bird?

:eyes: Whats she weigh and how many are dining on her? We got a 27 pounder (not inches:hihi: ) and we got 8 for dinner! Can you say tryptophan?

Sidenote: Who eats the turkey neck? It was always a tradition for me at my Moms growing up......I love it! Its the tastiest part of the turkey IMO!

10lb

for 4 of us smallest bird I ever had cant eat none but thats allright.

spence 11-22-2006 04:05 PM

Ours is 19 and it's big enough. Over 20 and it becomes more difficult to cook evenly...

Put the neck in the roasting pan and let it add some caramelized goodness to the drippings for the gravy.

My menu for tomorrow:

  • Calvados-Laced Squash Soup with Cinnamon and Bay Leaves
  • Roast Turkey with Herb Butter and Caramelized-Onion Gravy
  • Leek and Wild Mushroom Stuffing
  • Red Potatoes Tossed in Roasted-Garlic Butter with Sage and Bacon
  • Green Beans with Orange and Rosemary Gremolata
  • Cassis-Spiked Cranberry Sauce
  • Good old Apple Pie :)

That's an intimidating turkey. I used to work on a turkey farm as a kid. They were almost as tall as me when they got that big. You do NOT want a bird that big attacking your shins with it's talons, whether you're still a kid or all grown up....

The big ones seems to get territorial...

scoobe 11-22-2006 05:54 PM

How do you cook a bird that big?!

gone fishin 11-22-2006 06:22 PM

I have two boids - each weighing 14 1/2 lbs. We cook them for a family gathering of 16. It is easier to cook two birds and all the stuffings - that eliminates the battle over the drumsticks and dark meat against the white meet. After carving the meat left over is usually 1/2 a breast of turky.:as:
I also personaly think smaller birds are tastier and do not dry out as the biguns sometimes do.

striprman 11-22-2006 06:27 PM

I had a 2 pound Perdue chicken for supper tonight from one of the the food pantrys here in Brockton, I was thankful.

Does that count ?

basswipe 11-22-2006 06:34 PM

Not to big.

Jane is going to have dinner with her mother at the nursing home and I'm gonna cook a small 11lb bird for my myself and my dad.

We have 24 coming over and are cooking two birds at 20-pounds each ...

... prepared them last night until 12:15 a.m. ... bed at 1 a.m. ... then got up at 4 a.m. to put one in the oven ... back up at 5 a.m. to check on it ... then back up at 6 a.m. because of little miss Sydney -- my daughter who's just under 2 yrs and up ever since preparing for the day and playing with Sydney ... yikes!

As for the turkey necks ... Julie wanted to keep them in a pot outside, covered ... I warned her against racoons ... but go figure, we come down, let the dog out, continue working and go check on the dog ... both turkey necks eaten by dog and gizzards all over the courtyard ...:hihi: Oh Well ... it felt a little like that move "A Christmas Story" when they guys turkey gets trashed ... all's well now.

Enjoy

Flaptail 11-23-2006 01:12 PM

In Provincetown the necks are very popular!:bshake: :laugha:

OMG I am so full, nap time.

Swimmer 11-24-2006 11:53 AM

Leftover turkey dark meat and stuffing sandwiches on swedish rye bread. Montillio's coconut creme pie. mmmmmmmmmmmmmm

Had my brother over, squid kid's dad, and most of the rest of the fam. Its nice to see my mother eat a full meal. Three months ago she had a tumr removed from her stomach.

My brother-in-law showed up with my sister and he never leaves the house on holidays.

BW from AZ 11-26-2006 12:36 AM
