Anybody ever use Ash..
for making plugs, Ive got some chunks left from a few baseball bats I made from my grandsons for Xmass..
I've trie just about every wood out there at one time or the other, I planning on making a few darters, sealing them tight in a BLO cocktail for a day or two... just dont want to go to the bother if it's like trying to seal oak! |
very similar to oak
white oak is and has been used in boatbuilding so maybe that may work but it is an open grain wood also. I guess you can use most any wood for plugs, just depends on how long you want them to hold up to fishing. |
Thanks slip, it turns alot better than oak.... I could just let them spend a week in the blo, if that dont seal 'em notheing will!
It's not like I dont have plenty of stock, but the mind(at least whats left of it) is always in overdrive... bigger better more! Nothing ventured, nothing gained. thanks again... |
I believe that Stan Gibb's first plug was ash. Maybe Flaptail can elaborate here.

I was hoping you'd post a pic so I could say it was a "nice piece of ash" oh well... sorry for my futile attempt at humor :o

You're such a Wise-Ash :hee:

I have used Ash - had some dowels that were left over from a job. Turns well and finishes OK - not a smooth as AYC. I made a few spooks from ash. I would imagine that it will absorb water easily, but so does pine. Go for it - if you have the wood there is nothing to loose.:liquify:
