Flaptail, Nice article!
Nice article in OTW this month about Arnold Laine :kewl:
I learned a lot. Amazing individual to have such a strong impression on so many in just a few years surfcasting. |
I thought it was a well written article that provided some great Cape history.
|
Yes that was an excellent article in OTW. Thank You !!!
|
Good Stuff, Flap!
The pictures are MINT :musc: VB |
I agree, I really enjoyed the read. Great job.
|
From the first of his contributations I`ve allways thought Steve was the best OTW had. This guy really knows his stuff. He never disapointed.

Nice photos. It was a different place then.
|
Thanks, it was fun to do but I was just the coordinator of this piece. If it wasn't for Karl F, Tony C., #^^^^& Samms, Al Bentsen, Stan Kuzia, Adam R and Peter O'Niel's help I couldn't have put this together.
I hope to do more of these in the future and preserve the past through making more people aware of this sports history. Thanks everyone that helped. Steve Shiraka |
Nice story Steve. I especially enjoyed the line "this must have seemed much better a proposition than spending all his time in a machine shop". The guy knew what he was talking about:kewl: What is it with striper fishing and machinist's there has been quite a few greats that called it their trade. I bet a lot has to do with being cooped up inside all day that you really excel at anything outdoors when you get the opportunity. As always though there are exceptions to the rules and I will keep my day job.:sleeps:
|
Yes - it was very good....right up there with the best work that has been done....
That's not easy - you don't bang that out in a few hours. |
Steve, I am glad you were able to talk with #^^^^& Samms.
Who better to talk to, than Arnold's good friend? Look forward to reading it, stopped by Booksmith here in town, but all they had was a stack of December 06. Maybe somebody could bring a copy to plugfest, I could read? :) A picture of Arnold and #^^^^&... circa mid fifties. |
Look forward to reading it ... soon ... but have to say, I love that picture right above ...
|
Awesome picture Karl!
those pants look warm I miss the beach, can't wait to get back out there |

Thanks Steve!
Look forward to seeing ya.. you got my cell # right?
if not let me know, I'll PM it to ya. |
A guy at work used to fish the cape in the old days with his father every summer, you guys might know him. His name is Felice from Woonsockett. He has some pictures from the old days if your interested.
|
Eddy Felice...That name is well known, for sure!
I would love to see those pictures, as I am sure Steve and TC, and a few other history buffs would. |
Great read
Seeing those pics brought back some great memories of being out on the beach with my Dad and uncle back in the early 60's bouncing across the beach in an old willy jeep pickup. Monster rods, penn squiders and Cuttyhunk linen line. Man do I feel old now. Great story, keep them coming.

Ok Karl, Eddywas his uncle, his father was Pergo. I'll scan some for ya. I'm off to Fla tonite. Be on it next week.
|
Brought a tear to my eye. My dad knew Arnie well. I met him but I was only 5 or 6 years old so I don't remember much. There was always talk at Murat's about Mr. Lane. To hear some of the "legends" of the surf on the Cape call Arnold "the best" really tells you how good he really was. Even old Charlie was in awe of him.
Great write Steve!! |
that's a great article, Flap, as a relative youngsta in the surf, I love reading and hearing about the real history of our sport.
|
Steve...
Thank You, not only for the copy of OTW, but, the article on the one and only Arnold Laine. One Great Read, about one of the Greatest bassmen, if not the Best. This is one to lamintae and keep, look forward to more like it! Nice to see Flaptail, and company this AM too :) |
Nice job Steve, a good read. Hey is it true he was an very accomplished surfcaster?
I too enoyed the old time pics. Luv them ole Willy's. In the article what strikes me the most and what I miss having been around for is access/freedom on and to the shore.:ss: |
steve:I read the article twice.Well Done[bravo-zulu].I'm waiting for Dave T. to get back from out west to show him.that knucklehead needs a piece of "humble pie",man.See you on the 17th if not sooner.Bob M.
