Suggestions for Martha's Vineyard in May?

Hi all,

I'm new to the board and was hoping to get some advice for a week-long trip to the Vineyard in May. Will be fishing all over the place, but likely will concentrate my efforts near Menemsha, Cape Pogue Gut, and Squibnockett.

Anyone willing to share favorite flies, plugs, lures, techniques, etc. ???

Menemsha = herring run

Welcome aboard. You should do well the end of May. Plugs and flies that mimic herring.

Floating lines at Lobsterville, long leaders, if the sand eels are in make them small (6,4, and a few 8's) and sparse. Real sparse. Gartside sand eels have worked well, Rays flys as a sand eel for some more action. The new moons in may and june are great times to fish the Vineyard. All the above advice is gtg. Fish all night and you can't go wrong.

Thanks guys--I'll hit the bench this week to do sandeels--my favorite is the Jiggy and also a Ray's fly variation--and also some herring flies--I'll do a few in the Bondorew Bucktail style (5-7 inches)and then use the flatwings to make some near a foot long. Will post pix.

A few squid fly's would be a good idea.

Lake Tashmoo=worms. Check out page Rogers worm flies. She lived there. Also a very good small sandeel imitation (and they can be tiny in May) is Bonderew's Sandeel. It is simple and effective. It is about the size of a match but the fish have no problem finding it. I also like Roger's Slim Jim for a floating sand eel imitation. Also, bring some white flies for squid imitations... either heavily dressed Decievers or some other squid flies. May/June is also bluefish time on the vineyard so bring some wire and some excellent flies are Bonderew's Yellow Rebel and his Bonderew Bucktail. If the sandeels are numerous and the fish are picky try throwing a big Big Bonderew Bucktail or Razzle Dazzle as a changeup. Good luck. The Vineyard can be great. I hope it is good to you.
