How many leaders do you pre-tie for the season?

How many leaders do you have tied for the upcoming season.
I hit 150 last night. 2 more spools of FC more to go for boat leaders.
I used/gave away close to 200 last season.

I tie a bunch of different setups, store them in individual plastic bags and label w/length, weight and hook size (if applicable). Assembly line production, cut a dozen leaders, add terminal tackle, trim and bag. Saves time and my rigs come out better if I do one step at a time for the batch. I also tie surf leaders w/snap or bait hook at terminal end of variable lengths, no swivel.

Next task is bucktail/hackle/flash teasers to replace rear tail hooks on plugs. As well as 6 dozen flies/teasers.

The projects keep my mind on fishing and illusions of grandeur anticipating the 8 months of Stripers.

Spring is just around the corner!

I also do the assembly line method but I could never do 150 in a night. I pick away at them all winter. I'll more than likely end up with about 200 for this season. I always end up with a pack of swivels, some snaps and some leader material in the pouch of my waders by the end of the season.

What do you have going on for snaps/hooks variety? Just curious.

tattoobob 02-06-2007 07:55 PM

200 a season sounds about right, I usually do about 50 at a time thru out the season

parker23 02-06-2007 08:01 PM

Sorry for the confussion. I tie a dozen or 2 at a time. 150 in the last few weeks. I am usaully bloody after a dozen.

I have not tied eel leaders pre-season before. the 200 was just plugs. I'lll tie some eel leaders this year but I'm going to try connecting braid to mono directly with out a swivel this year for eeling.

I'll pack A binder (hook binder) and line up extra's for fall fishing.

Couple dozen at a time!

cheferson 02-06-2007 09:36 PM

Around 250-300 eel leaders last few seasons

blue oyster 02-06-2007 09:57 PM

about 75 for the season , i don't fish as much as i would like to

MrHunters 02-06-2007 10:28 PM

tie em when i need em.

Flaptail 02-07-2007 06:27 AM

Only when I need one. I carry a spool of fc and a small pack od snaps and swivs in my bag. FC goes bad you know. themore exposure the more brittle it gets. Good FC comes with a use date on the spool.

Mike P 02-07-2007 06:44 AM

None. I carry a small Plano box with swivels and Breakaway clips in a fanny pack, and a 1/4# spool of 40# clear Ande mono in my jig bag.

One 50 yard bracelet of 40# flouro behind the last row of inserts in my plug bag.

shadow 02-07-2007 07:15 AM

I wait till I need them, once a week I'll tie up a dozen or so what ever I need for the week, sitting on the deck on a nice warm day drinking a cold beer tying leaders works out better for me.

fishaholic18 02-07-2007 07:55 AM

None.
I tie as needed.
I Albrite my mono to braid and snell mono to hook or palomar to clip. Only takes seconds.

I do the exact same thing Steve.

Goose 02-07-2007 08:13 AM

Thers something about tieing fresh knots each time I head out that gives me that little extra reassurance.

decksweeper 02-07-2007 08:13 AM

I've started to tie some to get a decent amount to start the season...maybe two dozen or so....same thing with sluggos...I'm with Shadow...I enjoy doing it as I need them over a few cold ones...

The Dad Fisherman 02-07-2007 08:28 AM

I tie up a few a couple days, or the night before, I head out.

If you fish around a lot of current be aware that you might get a lot of line twist tieing direct. I went to this method and went back to using a swivel for that reason. On an open beach with less current I haven't had as much line twist.
I generally tie as I go, usually have 3-4 leaders tied in my waders with a few hooks and swivels and flouro in the bag if needed.

Me too. But no clips. I'm way to anal. I tie everything direct.

Great point Flap. I'll be covering this subject at the SWE show on Saturday.
I never have more than 3-4 leaders pre-made. Knots get very brittle.

Agree 100%. Tie them as you need them.I usually do them right before I go out for the night. If you want to tie something up in the winter, try a fishing rod, jigs, or your significant other.:hee:

Nope.

jim sylvester 02-07-2007 11:04 AM

a couple of hundered sounds about right for the season

usually tie by the week....

chris L 02-07-2007 12:03 PM

tie a couple for the night then when I needs em . Always carry snaps and swivels .

JFigliuolo 02-07-2007 12:16 PM

Try to always have a dozen on hand...

Was going to tie up a bunch this winter... haven't gotten around to it. Probably won't, hate for a knot to give out 'cause it was old.

ThrowingTimber 02-07-2007 01:25 PM

Usually on the spot. I'm meticulous about knots, ocd even. I couldnt do that to myself right now. I'd get 10-15 done in a week. If Im not happy with a knot I'm not using it, cut and retie until Im happy with it. If I get a good feeling about that night, or tide etc I'll tie up 3 long leaders and three short leaders, depending on how much give I need to have.

Slingah 02-07-2007 02:05 PM

usually a few at a time......I like to tie leaders in my garage while waiting for fishing friends to arrive.....fresh knots and it gets me randy to fish....:btu:

fishermanjim 02-07-2007 02:26 PM

i will tie leaders as they are needed,,, usually when i am gearing up to go fish,,, always with swivels, snaps, droper loops, etc,,,
