Help me fix my Lathe
 

I am not the most mechanically minded person, so my descriptions may be poor, but hopefully the pictures will explain better.

I broke this little wedge shaped metal peg that goes in a slot on the pulley that drives my lathe.

Now after I spin for a minute it works itself out and the motor spins but the pully/lathe doesn't. I have to find it and jam it back in to the slot and keep going. It does not get lost because of the housing over the drive.

How do i fix this. I there a part? Do I just have to rig something up? Unfixable? Somebody help!!!

there should be set set screw to hold it in ....

Looks like a shear pin to me

looks like you need a new keyway looks like it has seen better days go get a new one and i bet it will fit better and not work its way out

Ok, I am glad you guys have an idea about what is wrong.

Exactly how do i fix it? Can I just go out and buy one of these pins or did something break? There is nowhere to screw a set screw, so maybe a tab broke off? I don't really know [can't remember] what it looked like before.

Like I said I am not very mechanically minded, so if you guys can really spell out what I need to do in idiot language that would be much appreciated.

Ya, the keyway looks worn, take the key to the hardware store and try to get a new one. OR you might try using something to wedge in that space above the key. It looks like there is space to jam some kind of shim in there to keep it from vibrating out again. good luck, you should be able to atleast do that.

Inside the pulley there should be a setscrew, you will need a allen key to tighten it. Get the new key at a hardware store put it in and tighten it up. I am sure there is a way to lock the pulley so it does'nt move on length of the shaft.

get that keeper key out ...one way or another...

and then drive down to a true value store and either grab

one yourself or ask where they are.... lotsa drawers (match it up)

and get a replacement key or pin... they callem...

then figure out why??? the two pulleys are out of

alignment....because the belt wouldn't seek to travel over to

the other groove in the pulley , if they were perfectly aligned.

so you'll maybe need a straight edge across the two pulley's
or use a framing square to make sure nothing is out of square.

then look at the mounting bolts or look for places to adjust

both the tension (generally 1/2 to 3/4 inch deflection is normal)

when you push down on the belt with your thumb and the base(s)

look for a slotted hole ...loosen it slightly until you can tap it

with a rubber mallot into perfect alignment.

then adjust your rpm's to real slow and eye ball it.

keep checking and tightening until you can go faster and faster.

dude reverse it pull the pully off and then put the pin in:wavey:

Collar on the end of the shaft with a set screw.

Looks like there is a lot of play in the pulley. May eventually need a new pulley but a new key will help and a cheap fix. Good luck.

in the first picture I can see the set screw in the smallest groove on the rear pulley. Remove the set screw with an allen wrench and pull the pulley off. See how long the key slot is in the motor and the pulley and try to get the key under the set screw and lock it down.... Make sure the grooves in your pulleys are in line before you tighten it up...

:uhuh: He is correct, Nothing is broken although the inside of the pulley looks worn from spinning on the shaft. There are 3 separate pieces involved, the motor shaft, the pulley and a piece of Key Stock. The pieces are beat up because the set screw either is loose or fell out completely. The pulley should have at least one, most probably 2 set screws keeping everything together. I marked on your pic where it probably is. Can't really tell because the pic isn't in focus. The keystock MUST be under the set screw to keep from falling out. If you can't get a piece of Keystock long enough to span the entire length of the pulley make sure it goes under the set screw! The pulley might also have another set screw 90degrees away from the other one that seats against the shaft itself. If the holes are there but the set screws are missing remove the pulley and take it with you when you go get the new key stock and ask them for a replacement set screw.

Also as stated the two pulleys MUST line up! You might be able to put a framing square on the ends to accomplish this. If there are actually no holes you can drill and tap your own for the set screws.

What ever you do, don't force it! Use a bigger hammer!!! Try peening
the slot with a center punch once the key is back in the pulley!!! The
peening will tighten-up the slot.

that lathe is junk not worth fixin give it to me and i will get rid of it for ya.:huh:
