Macko's on buzzards bay...get a five gallon pail full

beverly at big bear Hunting and fishing can get them. I bought a dozen a few years ago. Dried and salted at about $3.75 each.

If you couldn't get your hands on an eelskin, what would you- have you- used as a substitute?

the ones capt. don has are small not big enough for a med size metal lip.

Maco's buy a dozen or more and I believe they are like a buck to a buck and a half each.

That is agreat price. The only upside to Big bear's skins are they are LARGE. The ones I got averaged 24" long and about 1 1/2 to 2" in diameter.

They get some that size too. Just need to go through them.

And that job is as much fun as it sounds. mmmm mmmm.

Bring some towels and hand sanitizer for after or better yet rubber gloves. I never remember the gloves.

I was rigging a few up one afternoon in the parking lot near the bridge when a kid and his dad went by on their bicycles. The kid noticed what I was doing and had his dad turn around so they could watch. I showed them how the skin jigs worked and a couple of different ways to rig them. But the funny moment came when I took out a skin and blew in the end of if. I thought the poor kid was going to throw up. He had this freaked out look and said to his dad,"did you see that. He touched that to his lips". I explained to him that this was the best way to check it for holes and to be sure the butt vent wasn't all blown out. The father was just standing back grinning. They went about their way after that with a little extra fishing knowledge.:rotf2:

sorry dave. i always seem to have to go somewhere, not fishing related, after searching thru the containers. Stink won't come off my fingers for a while. If I was going fishing right after I wouldn't bother with gloves. gurlieman. LOL

How would I go about curing my eelskins if I wanted to do it myself?

funny part was next day when you had the squirts i bet .. Your wife know your smooching them things .

Kosher salt. Either pack the skins in salt and put in the refrigerator in a tuperware container, or fill a jar with hot water, pour in enough salt to saturate the solution (extra salt should visible undissolved on the bottom of the jar) and once cool put your skins in there (they'll keep at room temp for years). If you are really adventurous you could try adding some formaldehyde (which I think they use in pork rind solution) but being pretty dull myself I haven't tried it.

what about when it's already on the plug? do you just put the whole shabang in a zip lock with kosher salt and leave it in the fridge?
I'm really going to need to get a "fishing fridge" or something, cause my wife is going to kill me when she see's this stuff in there!! :rotfl:
