Scouting
 

I have been fishing for stripers for about a year and a half and have done most of my fishing at the big ditch. I would like to do some surf fishing at the beach/backbays but don't really know were to go. I would like advise I am not looking for anyone to spot burn just general places so I can start to scout. I like to throw plugs mainly but won't rule out some bait. One last question can someone post a pic of an old redfin I heard they catch better and maybe how to tell them apart from the newer ones? :thanks:

Tex - depending on where you live, Mass or Rhody, I would recommend On The Water's fishing Shore Guide books - good info to get you pointed in the right direction. Otherwise, where ever you are - head east to saltwater :hee:

Scout rocky structure in the winter as it is more stable and does not change much season to season. The low tides around the equinoxes are the best time.
Scouting sand beaches in the winter is a waste of time as the prevailing winds are opposite of what they are in summer and sand structure changes radically from winter to summer. Scout beaches at low tide in the daylight - once the prevailing winds have shifted into southwest (May).

Of course, scouting the beaches at low tide during the "off season" may provide you with possibilities for future trips, and may also provide you with a rare opportunity where you may find some lost tackle that gets washed up on shore.
