Telescopic Surf Rods?
Hi S-B members:
I am evaluating the telescopic surf rod (spinning rod) and am curious whether anyone of you have experience in this kind of rod. Also, I am looking into the TM128 right now, if anyone of you use it before please comment a few words, thanks. CWL |
Okay, since no one ventured a response, I'll give it a go.
Mr. CWL...or is it LCW? :D It's my understanding that a lot of the "telescoping" rods...be they spinning or conventional, are "low-end" products that most serious fishermen don't even bother with. Quality and durability strikes me as a concern. Also, there has to be something that you give up in terms of rod action for the convenience of retractability. My $0.02? Don't bother. In many cases, you do get what you pay for with fishing tackle. Stick with a well known two-piece stick. May I ask what you were using the telescoping rod for? Chunking? If so, how much lead and bait were you planning to toss? -FWW |
Hi Fishweewee:
In Taiwan, we only use telescopic rod for fishing and there are high end in our standard. In this country, 2 piece sticks are common and for a surf rod above five feet a piece is really inconvenient for a jetty and rock region fishman like me. For mobility, I consider telescopic surf rod right now. However, I can not locate any good quality telescopic surf rod here so far---I did found very decent one from UK (150 pounds) and Japan and Taiwan but not here at all but either they don't do reatailor business or their price is too expensive. Indeed, I have searched the telescopic fishing rod here and found that the quality is extremely poor. And that is the reason I rasise this topic for disscussions (It is like to propose a green egg and ham from that Sam I am--Dr. Suseus). Ching-Wei Liao |

I'll mosy on into the store next time the missus takes a trip to WP for window shopping. ;) How's fishin in your neck of the woods? Friggin' Sound is a hot tub right now, just blues on my end. -FWW |

I'd have a hard time going to a 2pc (although that AllStar is nice :D ) let alone something that is telescopic. I just don't see how you could keep the sensitivity, power transfer, and strength of a 1 pc rod into one of many sections.... A friend of mine has a rod he got from cabellas that expands from about 7' to 8'. He likes it and fishes it often but it's certainly for light stuff, less than 1.5 oz...

I have a 5 peice kinda light spinning rod I that folds into a neat little soft bag with a mini plug box and have a spin real attached. I keep it in the car all the time. The soft package is maybe 18" by 5 inches by 1.5 inch thick with a small buldge for the reel. Never go anywhere without a fishing rod! Yeah it is kind of cheap but I have it set up with 12lb gear and it casts OK, it's no 9' surf stick but I have landed a lot of nice fish with it from the shore when on "non-fishing" trips. I remember having a day at the beach with the family... Laying in the hot sun watching some surfcaster run around pointing into the water and yelling for his wife to bring his tackle box over to him. I walked over to see what the big deal was (the water was very clear, calm and warm and the august sun was high...sure enough pods of bass were cruseing the break one after the other. He could not get them to bite a thing, including eels, they would look at it, come up to it but never touch it. After about 10 minutes I went back got the emergency rod and tried a few small minnow lures...no luck, then I tied direct to a small sluggo-like rubber with a small lead head. (sand eel lookalike)
It was sight casting for stripers...cast right in front, as soon as it hits the water jerk it hard and reel fast then pause....WHAM!..it was steady picken all afternoon. I was in my bathing suit chest high for about 4 hours...My family went back to the cottage and left me there...must have caught/released 30 schoolies. Another great "non-fishing" trip, thanks to the emergency rod. Honestly, I can't tell you how often that thing has come in handy. I think breakdown rods are good in a pinch but I would not buy one to do any serious fishing with them. Good back ups. |
