electronics box project

Couple weeks ago I asked about electronics box materials... cutting ect ect.

Here is the start of the project. This will be mounted on the top of the center console. and the box will hopefully have a few tackle drawers in it...Gotta make the most out of every nook and cranny on this boat.

the workshop :smokin:.... like i said.... we have a small apartment.

I used a 3 inch hole saw to cut the speaker holes.... Worked like a charm.... Way less risk in snapping the plexi glass.

2nd hole

Will those speakers affect your compass

MrHunters 03-03-2007 10:35 PM

they are shielded...

taJon 03-04-2007 07:13 AM

why would you use a compass these days

JK it was actually a really good ? that most wouldn't think of. even if they did affect it, it could either be recallibrated with the interference or just shut them off if you need to use the compass.

fish4striper 03-04-2007 08:16 AM

looking good so far!

MrHunters 03-04-2007 08:18 AM

the only place the compass is effected is if i put it directly behind the speaker. above and below i can sit the compass right on the box....

thats why i chose to put the casing back on instead of just mounting the speaker to the glass.

Thank You sir, that will be 5 Marine Units!

1 Marine Unit = $100

Looks nice...

thefishingfreak 03-04-2007 09:11 AM

lookin good.

keeperreaper 03-04-2007 09:45 AM

Looks sweet.

Raider Ronnie 03-04-2007 09:57 AM

Looks good !
What are you going to make the box out of ?

MrHunters 03-04-2007 10:12 AM

probably luan since i have a ton of it kicking around and then cover it with fiberglass... was suggested felt is a good fiberglass alternative and is typically used in subwoofer boxes which i just learned as well..... open to suggestions though... its all going to be trial by fire, figure it out as i go.

still coughing up plexiglass from yesterday... man that stuff makes a mess... not only do you have to deal with shavings but you have to fight static electricity too!

taJon 03-04-2007 10:59 AM

what happened to the storage area?

taJon 03-04-2007 11:00 AM

where did you get the radio? I have an extra if you want to bring that one back? Just a thought.

Looks really good. cant wait to see the enclosure.

MrHunters 03-04-2007 11:05 AM

storage area is going underneath. so figure another 6 to 8 inches below the bottom of the glass.

taJon 03-04-2007 11:39 AM

cool. good luck.

thefishingfreak 03-04-2007 12:55 PM

i got a ton of stuff you can have.
come down and pick thru it.
luan.
large sheets of okume' plywood:heybaby:
glass matt.
resin.
marine ply.
all that stuff come get it.

Christian 03-04-2007 01:53 PM

oh man, sweetness!
looks awsome.

blaruffa 03-05-2007 07:48 AM

MrHunters. That looks awesome!!! Makes me think I might want to flush mount my equipment in the Electronics box on my boat instead of having it behind a door.

Van 03-05-2007 07:38 PM

:kewl: :kewl: :btu: :btu:

Nothing like the satisfaction of doing it yourself.

Speedy Too 03-06-2007 07:38 AM

Looks great.....I did something similiar on my last boat. If I were to do it again I would put something under the radio to support it because my would loosen up after a rough trip.

photo day at the shop

MrHunters 03-12-2007 10:58 AM

MTC that looks great!

Do you have any tricks or ideas on how to add a cover to the electronics?

i was thinking to reases (sp?) the front panel somehow so I can attach a cover to an outer frame of the box... but that might get a little complicated.

trying to decide if I should glass the box directly to the console or just bolt it on. All tough to do with the wrap still on :)

very nice indeed :claps:

The only suggestion I have is to paint the screw heads black too.

Again nice work

MTC 03-12-2007 07:23 PM

The black heads are a good Idea. The local hardware store is going out of business and they have some I'll pick up...

taJon 03-13-2007 09:00 AM

does the cover for the raymarine still fit on there ok?

MTC 03-13-2007 10:20 AM

No problem... the cover pops right on... When the boat is underway you could put it in the white compartment the right to hold your cell and ipod. There is a connector there for the ipod...

MrHunters 05-14-2008 06:11 PM

resurecting an old thread. finished. (second box) first one not so good.

http://images36.fotki.com/v1179/phot...sbox002-vi.jpg

pretty much done... i made this way harder than it should have been and probably used double the money. slightly better than good enough

MTC 05-14-2008 09:36 PM

looks great

thefishingfreak 05-15-2008 06:42 AM

you should move that vhf antenna away from your head.
Take a 2' flourescent bulb and slide it up the antenna with the mic keyed up and you'll know why.
the bulb will light from some sort of radiation.
plus a little higher will get some more range out of it.

fish4striper 05-15-2008 07:04 AM

Nice job!
