Boston Area Fly Shop

I have some guests coming in from out of the country this weekend, and they are looking to see some high end fly fishing shops in the Boston Area.

I don't really know the area, and I am not a fly guy, so any advice is greatly appreciated.

They are more into river trout/salmon than the salt thing.

Is there a "Must See" fly shop in the area?

Thanks

Zac

There an Orvis shop at Faneuil Hall. Good Luck

or Firefly over by Post Office Square, One Federal Street, small place but they have some reel nice gear, and good guys that work there. Then you can walk up to Orvis at Faneuil Hall...

If you want to travel about 35 miles south, there is The Bears Den in Taunton. Nice shop with a nice selection of rods, reels and accessories. Tibor, Ross, Nautilus, Sage, Temple Fork, etc. It would be worth the trip.

they would be willing to drive up to an hour outside of the city if that helps.

Thanks again, guys.

[edit] thanks mac. we posted at the same time.

Concord Outfitters in Concord, of course, is a nice fly fishing shop. I know the owner, Andy, and he and his staff know their stuff.

I will second Concord Outfitters and Bears Den. The Orvis shop is worth missing, and I am not sure the FireFly shop is open on weekends.

I would mention First Light Anglers in Rowley as well. They are both fresh and salt but guide exclusively salt. They have a great shop and have everything.

There is also Blue Northern (an outdoors shop) that has a very large fly fishing setup. They even let you test cast rods.

I'll second Firefly and third Concord Outfitters. Both are great shops and sell my stuff too :)

Probably the two best shops around the Boston Area.

Rivers Edge in Beverly is good also

If we only have time for one, should we go to Concord Outfitters or Bear's Den?

tough call. You said high end stuff. Bears Den carries a lot of that. Not sure on Concord Outfitters. Check out www.bearsden.com

if the link is a no no please edit.

Bears Den is great but if they are even half-interested in seeing anything other than the seedy underbelly of a washed-up mill town, you should take them to Concord Outfitters. At least there you will have the option to see some US history like the North Bridge or the Minuteman National Park. If they are at all into US revolutionary history or US literature, Concord has a lot of attractions. It's the home of Thoreau, Alcott, Emerson, Walden Pond, the American Revolution, and much more. Besides, it'll take you less than half the time to get there from Boston as it would to get to Taunton and the owner is more of freshwater guy than salt water, which your friends may find more interesting.

I think they are mainly concerned with the shop that has the most/best offering of products.

I appreciate everyone's help. I am totally clueless on the fly stuff, and anything outside of RI for that matter.

Well, it might not have the best selection of fly fishing gear, but if you're talking in town Stoddards is still a classic.

Stoddards closed about 3 or 4 years ago.

Have your friend check out both shops on the net to decide which one they would like to visit. bearsden.com concordoutfitters.com
