Why don't we have a fishing flea market in Mass. ?
 

I know there seems to be a lot of interest in having one around here but I don't know of any really large indoor fishing flea markets where there can be tables of fishing stuff, new and used, custom plugs,rods and other fishing services. Not a fishing show like the mass bass or rissa, a flea market type where anyone can buy a table to sell their used gear or whatever.

what do you all think?
where could it be held?
maybe a fishing club could sponsor it and advertise it:huh:

Maybe there is a large hall in the canal area where it could be held.

We have quite a few sportsman/fishing shows in this area??? I would be all for it....can never have too many shows as far as I am concerned!:kewl:

IMO the date wouldn't matter, at least to me, but right before the season starts would be best as people get to load up on their arsenal before all the fun begins.
I think it'd do great.

MSBA did a flea market night four or five years ago...it did not go over very well. Not enough sellers and not enough purchasers.

Problem is that insurance and advertising drive costs up. IF a venue for short money could be found, then a group with existing insurance could do it. Sponsorships are tough without a lot of lead time. Advertising is difficult and costly also.

Still agood idea, just has more work than most anticipate.

How about anyone from the Canal Sportmans club?

this was something I kicked around in my area in CT (even asked JohnR for advice/support)........ never really got any interest to persue it though

VFW in westort rt6 had one for a while not sure they still do, lota dusty stuff. I bet Mike Bucko would know more.

U need a place,A big place..U have to rent tables u need a set up an break down crew..Then u need vendors..U would want to plan it for the same weekend every yr.an have patience to build it up..
Asbury an berkley charge 3 dollars a head..
Berkley had a banner yr this yr something like 1100 patrons.3300 dollars at the door.Tables are pretty much a wash for the hall an other things..so it will take time to really get something worth the effort..If I was to plan something up there I would do it first weekend in march before the big events take place.U wanna get the money first..

What about the Raynham Flea?
Think of the one stop shopping ... stolen tv's, drug paraphernalia, porn and now a chance for fishing gear. :jester:
In all seriousness, I would think the outside tables are affordable and if a few builders/fishing gear sellers got together you might get a following.

I went to the Berkley Flea Market and it was small. But they had a lot great stuff. I am probably going back again next year.

Charile Soares actually had a table at the Westport flea market years ago...I haven't seen that advertised in quite a few years now...I'm not sure that it still goes on...Bucko was also there, selling used and new equipment...I'd always leave with something.

I know what Bruce is driving at, not so much a place where builders could sell their new stuff, but anyone could sell their used stuff....and Slip, your garage isn't big enough :heybaby:

There's a couple of spots at the Raynham Flea-Market, one sells extremely LOW quality merchandise while the other can have some very interesting items for sale. I would think a fishing club would benefit the most and have the best resources to plan one...and with the help of the internet...I would think they'd get a good amount of people....
Fishermen do not want to go to a Flea Market to purchase brand new/shelf-priced fishing gear. If it was kept at a Flea-Market level...I think it would last. JMO-

That is the truth NIB,, After the last two weekends down here in Jersey alot of funds have dried up and plans to run up to Providence at the end of this month are being cancelled as of this morning by alot of fishermen that I know.. Not me I didn't go too crazy and can't wait...

In regards to running one of these flea markets > its a big effort,but it doe's show if you have a commitment from everyone in your club,membership etc., and put your time in planning and organizing it. It will be a success, as the NJ Asbury & Berkeley Striper Clubs have proven year after year...

I just wrote the same thing on another post. I know we talked about it a few weeks ago Bruce. We really should do this as it would be a good place to get rid of some stuff. Might be worth doing it late summer early fall too as the frenzy has ended by then and hopefully guys have lost lots of stuff and built up their wallets again. P

No offense but who has time to attend fleamarkets late summer early fall, imo this is a winta thing.

My only reasoning is that you won't have the competition from all the other shows and markets around the same time. Hell of a lot of people go to the plug event that the MSBA holds in the late summer on a Wed. nite. I would go to one when ever they held it wouldn't really matter to me.

i sell at the charlston flea market in r.i. from may until labor day weekend. it costs $25.00 for a small spot and 50.00 for a big one. i sell 80 percent fishing and seem to do o.k. maybe a few guys could put all their stuff together and sell it that way. the best part is your 10 min. from the breachway. my 2 cents worth.

If you are serious I have a great hall in mind. Im sure I could get a good price on it. It's within 5 miles or so of the canal. They would even open up the bar with a bartender and the posibility of food is available.

As for the Canal Sportsman's Club I am no longer an officer there so I cant say for certain but in my 23 year history with the club they are not likley to offer the grounds or rent the club due to the cost of an insurance rider and having to listen to the arguments of the members about having people show up at the club. Really not the most social of clubs thats for sure.

I'm not looking to volunteer for anything, just want to unload some not needed stuff that is still of some use.

The problem with existing flea markets is they have so much other junk, there wouldn't be enough serious fishermen going to it so that is why a fishing flea market needs to happen.
Why does there always have to be some issue of liability? I don't get it. I thought a bunch of guys could rent a hall, sell the tables to pay for the hall and advertising, and people can come and buy stuff that we don't use anymore, and maybe a few custom plug builders can sell a 100 plugs or so. why does it have to be so complicated? If it's that much work, I can spend that time selling crap on ebay and shipping it I guess but that ain't what I want to do.

You guys should see the crowd they get at Asbury,,, Insane .. Gary had a 2 handcarve limit and was totally sold out in 50 minutes ... show was from 9-2.... club members raped all Fixters pikies before the doors opened ,,, not 1 left ,,,, Lefty passed out 50 tickets 3 plug limit to the line before the show .. so he was sold out before the doors opened ... The place was so packed,, if you passed out you couldn't fall down .. amazing

How much does liability insurance go for on a two day event? How is sales tax handled on a Flea Market type event?

Not Sure what the liability ins would be.. however.. I know that the Wellfleet Flea market only allows you in as a "dealer"..after they see your tax #.... it is up to each dealer to collect and submit the sales tax.. and the State does do spotchecks there, on a regular basis.

I think you would want a swap , not a flea market per say. At a swap , we could just barbecue and people could trade around , etc. No need for sales tax if its just trading gear I would think.

Heck, I'd get a tax Number just to sell some of the things that I've acquired over the years. Clean out and start over!
