Sea Hunt Triton 212-underpowered?
 

So my father and I are still searching for a boat. Nearly settled on a 2002 21' CC Seaswirl Striper, but there are some questions.
We've also been interested in the Sea Hunts. I've found a 212 (21') that has a four stroke 115hp engine. I'm concerned that it may be underpowered, although the seller swears it is not.
What are your thoughts?

I was going to buy a seaSwirl 3 years ago and it came with a 150HP for the 21' er, sounds short to me. I have a 22' now with a 200HP and I feel like I could use a few more ponies with that.

Atleast 150 on a 21cc. sounds under gunned,, everybody swears

I own the 22' Sea Hunt with a 150 Yami. With 3 guys I cruise at 20-23 knots with WOT ~35 knots.

I'd suggest more than a 115 on the 21'

I have friends with the 21 Striper DC and the 21 SeaHunt CC - both with 150s and both are fine. I would not consider less power on them though.

The dealer (Inland Marine-Chepachet RI) says they regularly sell these boats with F115s and the Yamaha 115 is strong motor. He says at 3800 rpms the boat cruises at 28 knots (gps speed). I struggle to believe it. I know Yamaha makes great motors but...

That's BS 33 mph @ 3800 rpm with a 115 is BS. That would be real hard with the 150 me thinks

I agree- Maybe he said mph instead of knots but I still think that bull.
Hopefully I'll be able to see during a trial--if we get that far.

I looked and found the Yamaha / Sea Hunt performance bulletin on that (knew I had seen one) so you can check for yourself. Keep in mind they probably tweak these for the best possible results like days when the earth's gravitational pull is reduced to make the water less dense - stuff like that :doh:

Get the biggest motor that the maufacture recommends,if not you wont be happy.

agreed. you can never have too much power. its just not possible.

I talked to that guy at the show and heard that same story. They seemed to be doing more drinking thatn pitching their boats. I felt it was underpowered and thought also the sea hunt weight was light for a fiberglass boat. I decided to buy a key largo with a 150hp instead.

Clammer has a 21 Seahunt with a Yammi 150 EFI - it is a well build, good riding, hull. And it can put up with ClammerExtremeMissions.

Clammer Extreme missions require a hull to remain in the water for 18 month INtervals, require integral underhull skid pads, levitation based degrounding capabilities, and a glassed in rock-magnet. The maintenance schedule is such that maintenance is optional. Said vessell has also vindicated itself with the Seal Team 19 3/4 Bluefish Eradication missions.

Seriously, it's a pretty good hull. You do notice the lightness on occasion when compared to an old Seacraft 20, but it is a lot drier too...

Both Clammer and #^&#^&#^&#^&#^&#^& highly recommend Sea Hunts- I put a lot of stock in that because I know how much time they spend on the water!

I heard the minimum hp you should put on a boat is no less than 85%the max hp the boat can handle.

I don't know about New boats, but any 20+ foot boat should have no less then a 150!
I have a 20' with a 175hp, goes nice low 30's and tops out with 2 guys and light load 40.

At the risk of being accused of pushing my own boat, the McKee Craft 196 that I have for sale is a little smaller but it will outshine a Sea Hunt 212 or Seaswirl Striper 2101 in terms of quality and its performance with a 150 is outstanding.

I've looked at the photos of your boat and it looks like a great boat. That extra foot in size makes a big difference to me and we're looking for a boat with a t-top. Good luck with the sale!

That speed is on Watermans Lake... The boats seem to run a little faster in calm ponds. He could be talking MPH and not Knots..

Clam boat on Watermans reported 45 on the bay with two people 30-40 Knots flat out in ideal conditions.. It will handle some decent sized water.

I have the 2101 DC Seaswirl with a Yamaha 150 HPDI and get 40 in good seas 42 in flat seas. If it was a four banger I would go with 200 as you will not like the pickup even with a 150 four.

Sorry to say that I am with the rest of this crowd that believes a 115 would be underpowered. I fish with Moses regularly and he is always contemplating putting a 200 on his Sea Hunt 22. In general I believe dealers sell boats with the bare minimum engine in order to keep the price down.

Dealers do it to keep the cost down and sell the boat.
They'd love it if you repower in a couple of years.
There is more than just a 35 HP difference between a 115 and a 150. Two more cylinders for one.,

I agree with whoever here said get the most HP rated for the boat for the best performance.

My 20 walk came with a 150 and it was underpowered. Much better now, and I'm still not at the max allowable.

At 3500 lbs and 115 hp you would break 30 mph with the wind....

Its common for dealers to underpower boats to keep the cost down. That was Bayliners trick for years. 115 is to small in my oppion. I had a 220HP mercrusier i/o on my proline 21 walk. That seemed just right.

I have a Sea Hunt 172 with a 90 Yama. My GPS says 37knots at 4500 RPMs.

The Sea Hunt hull is amazing! I had this boat (with #^&#^&#^&#^&#^&#^&) in 4 to 6ft seas and a 40 knot wind out of the NE. We stayed dry all the way from Quonset to Warwick Cove. I had to throttle back some but I have been all over, all the way to Beavertail, Anawan, Narrow River, Newport and never felt in harms way. Heavy boat for it's size. At 17' 2" with a full tank of gas and the T Top it weighs right around 2000#.

I plan on moving up to a 20 or 21 when I have saved enough to buy it cash.

I got a 22' Mako with a 150 and it sucks a$$... I top out at around 22-25kts... nothing is worse than being underpowered.
