wondering if anyone used spinnerbaits or buzzbaits for stripers

the spinnerbait is probably the mosty versitle bait for largemouths in skinny water


so who had tried them

any success

who makes them

I know a couple of musky lure companies that make an inline..wondering how that would be

I've thrown a spinner bait before and was catching shoolies with consistency until a larger one totally destoyed the thing. They work but it is pretty hard to keep the bigger size fish on. The photo in my logo thingy is my fresh water set up. That fish is exactly 28" caught on a spinner bait. The hook barely survived that fish and I couldn't use it after that fish.

there has to be a saltwater spinner out there

I've tried it with mixed results.
The ones I had were from that site we talked about and I put new hooks on them.
I've debated making some out of plugwire and a serious siwash but havent gotten around to it.

I made a big one a few years back and it slayed until I launched it into the abyss. They are real easy to make and work pissah.

There's a guy who makes spinners out of Ware, Ma. I'll check the packages when I get home. They look like monster roostertails (2 - 3 oz) I picked up 3 of them at the Standish Sportsman show in February, they'll throw a mile I can't wait to try them out.

Even the saltwater grade baits straighten under the strain of less than impressive stripers. You need to buy the in-line muskie versions.. those other ones will be trashed after 1 to 4 bass.

Check out Cabela's. They carry a strike king spinner bait with reds in mind. I also think Wallyworld carries a spinner bait by Boone meant for saltwater. It looks about as tough as a boone needlefish.

That might actually work because the lead-head is free swinging... I just wonder if that's big enough...

yeah....looks like the largest size is 1/4 oz.

I was just watching a show not to long ago that was using booyah spinner baits for some good size reds and they looked to be holding up all right.

I plan on throwing these this year. i traded a couple plugs for these. a guy in MN made these ones. I'm working on some other stuff with him now. I have to trade out the bronz hooks on a couple of them, have VMC on two of them. 7-9" long

Jim, The Lime color one is about 3.25oz. and the Black one is 2.5oz. O' Yah Never caught a Striper with These but caught Clammer Fish.......................

Funny to see this thread...This has been an on going joke for about 7 years with a buddy of mine. He bought a "Striper Spinnerbait" back in 2000 or so. The first season he threw that thing to no avail. After that it kinda sat in the tackle bag for a season. Since then the only time he brings it out is when we are in an all out frenzy and stripers can be caught on anything. This is when we try every gadget that we have ever purchased that has had no previous success. I remeber one day on the Susky Flats when we were catching a fish on every cast. He tied that thing on and could not buy a strike. I would even throw a walking bait with no hooks, get a striper to follow it , and then let him throw right in front of the spook. Still nothing. The thing is like striper kryptonite or something.

I would'nt bother, there are so many baits that work well already..

The biggest complaint I hear from fresh water guys is the wire, there isn't a wire, including titanium, that can hold up to large mouth never mind stripers two or three time the size in weight. Theres a reason they use fresh spinner baits at tournaments, they don't trust the wire after a few good bass.

I would say your best bet is with the large inline muskie spinners from MN and Canada. They're about the only thing I've seen HD enough that I would consider.
Forget about spinnerbaits.Everything i've seen and heard of was destroyed or bent up to where it was useless once you start getting into larger class fish.
I've also toyed with the idea of trying to make large HD saltwater buzzbaits. Still kicking that one around. Going to a lead pouring event this weekend gonna pick some brains and if I see the right mold. :smokin:

I'm collaberating with him on some musky baits, sending him an 11" blank and he says its small. He throws plugs up to 20"!!

I have a friend he an I where buzzbait finatics.he has been throwin em in the surf with good results.The wire does take a serious beating tho.
SS thats a hawg hunter.very good bait.Hank Parker won a classic with that as a Manns guy they went an bought the design from hawg hunter.So he could sell it under the Mann's sponsorship..
They make em pretty big over 1 oz that will certainly work fine in the surf..
I have caught striper's up to ten pounds on spinnerbaits. fishing in the Chesapeake bay system for LMB..

Jim they'll take them theyre just over grown perch any how. I put a stinger hook on the blade itself, lots of times they'll be slamming the blades and you cant hook up, just just want that SPARKLY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!:hihi:

Well ..... funny you asked ......... I made some for trolling. I couldn't find a proper spinner bait that I liked so I adapted a 4 and 6 oz spire point mold to accept the wire. THen I used .092 (i think) ss welding wire and molded it. I still have to bend the wire and paint most of them. I have a variety of different blades to try ....... the 1 has a massive blade that's about 4" across and 4 or 5 " long. I'm using the nylon hair and tying it like a parachute rig with a little glow paint and glow hair added in to add a little more life in the dingy waters we have here in the Chesepeake ........... I casted about 5 but I haven't tied them yet ........ I'll have them ready in about a month when we go into trophy season ........ I'll try to get one done early and post a picture if anyone is interested ........ let me know

:cheers: Boone make some spinnerbaits in smaller weights. you can see them on their website. Goggle Boone Bait Co. They look like they would handle smaller fish but I don't know about keeper fish. We had them at the shop a couple of years ago but they didn't move well.

I can't wait to throw these. If all goes to plan, I'll cast it a mile, let it drop for a 10count, reel it in about 10 cranks and boom - fish on.

reality - bail closes early, lure snaps off, and I go back to chunking with a high/lo rig.

I've used them during the winter and caught stripers right next to ice pack.....go figure:). You want them to last, I'd buy the titanium wire from Bass Pro, they won't bend...stripers are tough on anything else.

hi, I'm new to the sb.com, I'm now making spinnerbaits in 1 1/2oz -2 1/2oz size. these lures are huge and intended for musky,pike etc.. I"ve never used them on stripers yet, this spring wil be the first year, I"ve heard people were using smaller bass size 3/8-1/2oz and the stripers were twisting them up, that's because of the .035 wire, on mine the wire is a bit heavier at .051 gauge. I will soon be making 10" striper in-lines , 2-4oz. on .063gauge wire, be happy to give you guys and gals one if we happen to meet on the surf! or I mean the Hudson River, these lures aren't intended for the surf, but for river fishing for stripers. I mainly use traditional methods for surf fishing, plugs ,tins etc.. If you go to my pics albums you"ll see me holding fish taken on top water plugs. I'm also making casting jigs in 2oz. and 3oz. size really cool! I"ll have pics of them soon.
