I love that sound this time of year!!
Last year, 'round this time, maybe later, I was working the mid-shift. Around 0200, pulled into the local parking lot, window down (Real warm that night) and heard them. Turned the car off and sat a listened to them for about 1/2 hour. Partner pulls in and asks what I'm doing so I tell him. To this day, he STILL thinks I'm nuts (Although he is right) Very peaceful after a long winter. Brings everything into perspective and lets you know that the fishing is not that far off! I love it!!! |

Link....and it's the equivalent of budhist monks chanting in a temple... as the tree frogs begin an echo melody that... kind of ricochets off the origional reverberations of the third kind. i know what you mean. |
MountainCaster called from his home in Kentucky. Says "here, listen to this" Holds his cell out so's I can hear the peepers. All is right in the world now.
|
I went outside to my Jeep last night around 9. It was a veritable peeper symphony. Beautiful early spring night, clear sky, crescent moon, and one lone coyote howling in the woods behind the house. I had to just stand still for a few minutes and drink it all in.
Man, this sure beats the hell out of living on Long Island :humpty: |
Had to dig up the peeper threads from past years to check out the dates. First night I have heard the symphony this year. Right on schedule.

The spring peeper is a small species, attaining an adult size between 0.75 inches (19 mm) and 1 inch (25 mm) long. They have a dark cross on their backs roughly in the shape of an "X" (thus the Latin name crucifer, for cross)[1], though sometimes the marking may be indistinct. The color variations of the P. crucifer are mostly tan, brown, olive green, and gray. Females are lighter-colored, while males are slightly smaller and usually have dark throats. This frog has a vocal sac located by its throat, which expands and deflates like a balloon to create a short and distinct peeping sound. Only males have the ability to make this loud high-pitched noise, and they use it to attract mates. This creature lives in wetlands, marshes, and pond or swamp regions in order to support the aquatic environment the larvae need. The Spring Peeper breeds between the months of March to June, and deposits around 900 eggs that are hidden under vegetation or debris at the water base. After hatching, they transform into frogs and are ready to leave the water in about eight weeks.

When the peeps get in full swing , take a walk at night on the bog outside my backdoor it's freaky, no BS even without a couple of wobbly pops it's a wickid pissa experience . Next Sat. night come on down and feel what we feel during this early Spring season ,I even think the ECHO and REVERB adds to it .

I wished they'd pick one night and have a big -old-orgy and get this peepin' stuff over with......I don't find it as mystical as Mister Link does...
 |
We've been hearing them for over a week now. I almost ran one over late thursday night as I was driving home. I don't mind the noise too much, but I hate having them hopping all over my yard and taking up residence in my pool all summer. I scooped 4 of them off the pool cover over the weekend and there was already an egg sack floating on top of the cover.
I might have to take Spence's advice and do something to the little pond next door. |
