Local knowledge, please...

Dear All,
I'm not new to the NYC area, but I am new to striper fishing. I have been holding out for Sunday for what feels like an eternity (but really, am I alone?!). I could think of nothing nicer than throwing a line on opening day, but I have no idea if I am too early... too impatient... too something... Is the water in the Sound (Long Island Sound) too cold right now? are the fish in at this time of year? Should I be fishing in the Atlantic side or the Sound side...? So many questions!!
Can anyone out there help me? Thanks!
Irish Bass...

Join a fishing club.

Get involved with a local fishing club. The guys in the club will be more than happy to show you the ropes. You'll meet some new friends in the process. FishHawk

I am not sure but I am heading to the Saltwater Show in Providence ,RI tomorrow and will fish there with the new rod. I will post something when I get back. My general inclination would be to say it's a little cold right now, but others may say differently.
Welcome aboard,
-Joe

Water is still pretty cold, but there are all kinds of reports of schoolies and some small keepers around(no first hand knowledge here), probably hold overs...it never hurts to wet a line...good luck.

Thames River still has tons of leftovers, of course, also has ton of fellow anglers trying for them. Most shore waters are still too cool for anything, but one never knows. There is always that chance. Besides, just getting out is better than flickin the tube. You could visit the RI Sportsman show. Always plenty to see and feel there.

Thanks...

Guys - All very helpful. Think you're right though... nothing like getting the line wet... Looking forward to it!

Speaking of clubs, can anyone suggest a club in the NY area which encourages Bass (ale)?

Waters are cold enough to send anatomical appendages seeking internal refuge, but there are fish around. Some in the mid-30" range.
You just have to use your head, and put in a lot of shivering!
