92# bass mount...have you seen this?
 

Giant Striped Bass
Every fisherman dreams of landing a truly legendary fish, and State of Maryland biologists did just that. In 1986, a 92-pound striped bass was captured off the Maryland coast in Chesapeake Bay. This magnificent fish is the largest striper ever captured. The beautiful mount will be on hand at the Expo. A female, her eggs were used in the state hatchery program to restore striped bass along the Atlantic Coast. Be sure to see this amazing specimen.

Must be impressive. I must have been in a cave I didn't hear about this one. (if that is it it doesn't look like a 92 to me, but having never seen one before doesn't make me that much of an expert)

Can't understand why biologist's would kill the thing.

I think we are all in the cave on this one. 92 #'s, maybe it meant to say 62 #'s. I think the whole world would know about the fish. Unless they feel its safe finally to bring it out in the open about how they caught and KILLED such a large specimen.

I would think that the fish was caught in a net, not rod and reel. Thus not getting the same level of attention.

I noticed they said "captured" not caught. I guess 92 lbers are too smart to get caught on rod and reel.

bottom line is this, if it was a 92# and these are biologist then it should have been either kept for egg production or released... Striper fishing is supposidely not what it use to be and they need all the help they can get to replenish.

I first read of this fish three of four years ago. It does its rounds traveling from show to show, people taking pictures with it, that sort of thing. I can't recall were I saw the article or if it contained info regarding its capture. However, even in better pictures that I've seen the fish doesn't quite look 92lbs. But never having seen one or caught one I can't be one to judge.

I caught and released that same fish many years ago, it grew so BIG now sad to saw its gonna be on display oh well

Big fish indeed, but the biggest ever captured? I've heard reports of a couple over 100 pounds netted in the late 1800s. I'm not sure how accurate those reports are, but they've been quoted a number of times.

If I remember correctly,it was caught in a net,and didn't survive.Noone intentionally killed it for a mount.There's a mount that went over 90 lbs(net caught)at Capt Don's bait and tackle,Charlestown,RI.(It is impressive)

Nice looking fish but my feeling is any bass caught over 30lbs should be released to grow bigger and to give somebody else a chance to catch it. I know a couple of guys who keep anything of any size just to show it off. That is what camera's are for.

Newport Lures use to sell his soft plastic shads with that as a backdrop for years. It was at the Worcester and NY shows.

The State of Maryland runs or ran a seining program to monitor the health of the bass stock. I think the story of this fish is they pulled it up in one of there nets during a survey off the Patuxent River in the Chesapeake and the fish died before it could be released. I believe this mount normally hangs on the wall of the Maryland DNR office in Annapolis.

IIRC the fish was caught by biologists from the state of MD who were doing electro shock sampling in one of the rivers.
