Looking for a new rod
 

I started surfcasting last year, i am in the market for a new
rod.
I am torn or it's simple ignorance but I really don't know what to look for. I am looking at a Lamiglas® Tri-Flex Surf Rod 2 piece
or St. Croix® Premier® Surf Rod 1 piece. thinking of an 8 to 10 footer.
But like i stated I need a little education with this.

the question is: what kind of fishing do you want to do with it? Plugs, bait, eels, etc....

I guess the first thing I would consider is whether or not you can transport and store a 1 piece. If the answer is yes I would definately stick to one piece rods.

I think a batson 1088 would be a good choice but you might also be able to get by with something less expensive. I wouldn't spend too much on a rod until you really know what you want out of one.

For short money it's tough to beat a Tica Dolphin or Tsunami.

I think that St Croix only makes one piece blanks in the Avid line, not the Premier.

I was in Red Top on Saturday. They have a sweet Avid 10' one piece spinning rod for $230 during the spring sale. If I didn't have a forest of rods already, it's one I think I would have bought.

Where do you fish? In general , not specific spots please. (Like canal is OK , pole 275 would be too specific)

If your looking for an 8-10fter. then go in the middle and get a 9ft. I just bought a Ron Arra 1084-2. Very nice rod.

do you throw alot of eels? or mostly plugs and what size, do you already have a reel for the rod?what is your price range?

If the triflex fits your applications i give it the nod. Its got a soft tip so its not rippin eels lips and can still throw decent wood, and bring in large.

We need more information to help you. Do you mostly fish on sandy beaches, jetties, or rocky beaches? What reel are you going to use on it? What is your price range?

i fish all canal, jetties beaches. I fish alot of plugs and slugos and sometimes eels.

One rod probably wont do that all.
Lami 1201M is my favorite all around rod, tougher w/ sluggos but wood and eels no problem

I live in RI where is the best knowledgeable place to get this.

yes I like the 120 1m as well good for jigs as well for the canal.that is a lamiglass 10' rod.good all around rod.

i like my lamiglas 11' one piece. if u have room for a one piece rod, its definitley the way to go hands down. this is taken right out one of the books i own:
throwing chunks: 11' rated for 4-8 onz.
pluggiing open beach: 8-9' 1-2.5 onz.
throwing clams: 9-10' 1-4 onz.
jetties: 9' stiff action 1-4 onz.
eel slingin: 9-10' soft action 1-3 onz.
rocky shore plugs + poppers: 10-11' 1-4 onz.
small bass: 7-8' .5-.75 onz.
throw chunks at race point: 11-12' heavy action 2-10 onz.

Hi,
I just brought the 8'6" model blank. Nice looking. Plan on using it for schoolies fishing, small bluefish,etc. Preferr the 2-piece set-up, would not use it for anything really big.

Does Red Top spring sale still going on tomorrow? Do they have 10%off on Lami?

Yes, I think it goes on till the end of the month. I'm pretty sure it covers all of their factory rods, Lamis included.

Did I mention that sweet 10' one piece St. Croix Avid they had for $230? ;)

Thanks for your help guys i appreciate it. I also took a look at this reel the other day. It is a US reel 240 Sx it is real tiny but it has a large spool. It is reviewd to with stand massive fish. I am Curious to know if anyone has heard of this reel or used it. What i like about it is that I throw Braid when i use plugs and the larger spool is said to reduce the nice wind knots and the casting ability is described as casting it out a country mile.

I stand corrected. It ends today :(

The other rod I'd throw in that group is Daiwa Sealine

Too bad it ends today, will have to give a full price. The good thing is Lami worth it. I also like St Croix Avid but Lami is first in the list.
