Sandman,

You need to get up in that plane ASAP, there's a real need for a fishing calendar 2007 II.

Mr. Sandman 04-19-2007 08:29 PM

I thought about it. Maybe Saturday, the weather is suppose to be nice. This looks like it will stay open for a long time...its deep now. If it stays open for the June run...thats where I will be most nights.

Squid kids Dad 04-19-2007 08:53 PM

If it stays open the On Time Ferry will be very busy during the derby...

Gunpowder 04-19-2007 11:35 PM

yah that opening is the newest edition to the west tisbury great pond opening except 5x as wide and deep. im sure if it remains open as predicted, it will be an excellent feeding spot for bass. so save some room for me sandman, ill probably be standing next to you!

Bronko 04-20-2007 06:18 AM

I think we can officially call that video 'fish porn.':heybaby:

Stopped working on the yard and walked out to the cut...It appears pretty deep in the middle, a small skiff passed thru from the ocean side while I was there and made a few casts. If I had to guess it is over 10' deep in the middle and it has cut a channel of sorts for a ways out.

someone posted this on another site. Some great shots here...

What a hot spot that is going to be!

Mike P 04-23-2007 10:58 AM

Think about it-the outgoing tide along Norton's moves left to right anyway, and the prevailing winds are SW. Outgoing tide moving into and colliding with that outflow, with a 15 kt SW kicking it up.....

Swimmer 04-23-2007 11:01 AM

Mike I am not going to be able to wait until the end of September.

I'll be there in a month. LOOKS GOOD

Mr. Sandman 04-23-2007 04:35 PM

Word is it is 15' deep in the center. Also, someone here said the last time nortons broke thru like that it was in 1954 and it took 15 years to close. I counted 5 places where the ocean broke thu that stretch of beach, this is the only one that is still open.

Its good and bad...a good spot no question, but it is going to be a pain getting home from chappy. I can't tell you how many times I take the 1100pm or midnight boat over and drive home around 4:00am. Its going to mean more all nighters and a few rough days at work the next day.

Fish On 04-23-2007 05:54 PM

Mother nature is amazing. Jim do you think it is or will be navigable? How about the rest of Katama bay? Any word of if they'll mark a channel? It doesn't appear to me that a trip from Oak Bluffs to the Hooter would be that much shorter per se, but depending on whether or not you need to stop at the gas dock, go to town, etc. it could be a gas/time saver.

Those pictures are a unbelievable. There must be so many changes taking place both in and outside the Bay. It will be ery interesting to follow along with what takes place. This is an historic event.

RIROCKHOUND 04-23-2007 08:17 PM

If the tidal exchange is enough, and we get enough storms to keep it open, no reason for it close on the short term. A mild summer-fall and it will likely seal up tight IMHO

enjoy it!

Mr. Sandman 04-26-2007 01:45 PM

Unreal! Someones going to attempt to close it now.

Squibby17 04-26-2007 02:00 PM

This is ridiculous. Good luck trying to fix that. The idea of the bridge is my favorite. Anyone who's been out there knows that stretch of beach is thin enough as it is and changes year to year or even month to month. It would be hilarious to have them build the bridge only to have another storm break the beach 200 yards further down.

The residents of Chappy know that the risk is always there, hell for 3 months of the year they cant use that route because of the damn plovers. I highly doubt that this goes through. Their better of waiting and seeing if the cut closes it's self like the great ponds do twice a year.

RIROCKHOUND 04-26-2007 02:12 PM

Closing it is actually feasible. They closed the breach in the OBX after Hurricane Isabel. I dont see why, but it is feasible. It is just a matter of getting enough sediment in the breach, fast enough, preferably over a stretch of fairweather and non-spring tides

ROTFLMFAO

"Please find attached our PDA initial request for Emergency Funds to Restore our Norton Point Beach, which serves as an emergency exit for the 375 homeowners on Chappaquid#^&#^&#^&#^& in the event of fire, "

He expecting the whole freakin' island to go up at once? Or did he get word that Teddy was planning a cook-out this summer :rotf3:

I don't think "Foolhardy" is a strong enough word. And he expects to do this for a measly half a million. Including building a bridge :wall:

Let me guess--Winn Davis is a wash-ashore from Noo Yawk :rollem:

livinit 04-27-2007 09:53 AM

I fish with Jim quite often and we've had some discussions on this. As much as I'd like to see the opening be closed up because of my own personal fishing habits, I am in agreement that mother nature created this and mother nature should close this up. It is going to be difficult going to and coming from Chappy, especially those late nights. But we have found ways to compensate when the beach is closed for 2-3 months because of the plovers. I would like to see some competition for the On Time ferry or for the ferry to run some later shifts, but that just may be wishful thinking.

I'm curious to see what happens with the fishing at Wasque because of Norton Pt.

:hidin:

Believe me...nothing will get done, even if they GET the money, the studies alone will cost millions and take decades. Some guy in Nebraska may have some objection. By the time it actually gets traction, it will have filled in on its own.:bl:

Swimmer 04-28-2007 10:56 AM

All nighters will become a very common occurence while fishing Chappy. Thats o.k. the seats in the truck go back quite a ways.

jkswimmer 04-28-2007 07:43 PM

What a crock this idea is, to fill in the breach so a few people don't get stranded on a island, that they choose to live on.

UserRemoved1 04-29-2007 05:12 AM

Agendas...

Any updates/pictures? Are they still thinking of trying to fix it?

How strong are the currents up in Edgartown harbor? They must be moving pretty good.

Mr. Sandman 05-09-2007 07:50 AM

I doubt this "repair" plan gets much support. Most are kind of laughing at the guy who's idea it is. IMO it is way for him to get his hands on some free money, nothing more.

As for the current, it is moving pretty hard thru the narrow gap where the chappy ferry runs. There is something like a 2 hour difference in tide between the ocean side near norton point and edgartown harbor so the water can at time move pretty hard. I heard that the chappy ferry is at time having trouble negotiating the strong cross flow, esp during the full mo

IMO it will silt up. A little island has formed back in the bay already, the shifting sands and sw winds will have an effect on it. There are a few fish there however...nothing too large at the moment.

RIROCKHOUND 05-09-2007 08:18 AM

Flood-tidal delta = the little island.
pretty good exchange if thats forming.
SW wind and any long-period, moderate swell will help it close up pretty quick IMHO.

ThrowingTimber 05-09-2007 12:53 PM

Im chomping at the bit. Just a few more weeks and I'll be there
