teasers and eels

does anyone use teasers with eels?

if so, would it be the same as a plug: with 12" teaser/30" eel leader

Fishpart 05-11-2007 11:38 AM

Never tried it myself, but I believe Tony Stetzko caught Bertha on a teaser in front of an eel.

My only concern is getting hung up on a rockpile because an eel runs deep where many plugs run higher in the water.

I've done it when switching from a plug to an eel just for goofs. Rig it the same as w/a plug. Not worth it if you ask me, since the eel is down low, you hang up more w/the teaser.

Jim,

Just curious. Do you find you get alot of better fish on teasers? I've fished the cape and taken decent fish on redgils and it was the only thing I could get them to take. The reverse seems to be true for most of the fishing i do in rocky areas and areas where their don't seem to be any small bait or sand eels. for me having a tease rarely does anything but allow me to grab a few dinks.

I guess I wouldn't want to deal with a teaser when I'm throwing eels.

sometimes

try to picture a food chain

I think its just more of a "TEASE" to bass to see a plug chasing a fly (baitfish)

been thinking about the bunker that are here and i have some BIG flies/in the 8" range that i might use tonight

but to answer your question mike, the bigger fish hit the plug most of the time

RIROCKHOUND 05-11-2007 11:59 AM

learned the hard way a few times. no teaser around our stretch jim.... too many hangs...
PM me your plans.. not sure if I'm out and about tonight or not but I can drop those things off if you are local.

i also find that I hang up more if i'm fishing a plug on the bottom with a teaser.

Depending on how you fish teasers could pose a problem. It all happens on the "take" or "strike". If the fish hits the teaser I want to set right away, if it hits the eel I set after I drop. Either way you may miss some fish depending on what they hit. That's why I don't use them with live eels.

...imho...

less teaser leader with the eel for the obvious reason- also most people underestimate the importance of a longer leader when fishing teasers- see Daigneault- you don't want the bass brushing the bottom bait when it tries for the top...

Not necessarily true. You can make the teaser weedless by tying in a mono loop as part of your tying process, if you tie your own :uhuh: You can also wrap the shank with lead to affect the sink rate of your teasers.

snake slinger 05-11-2007 03:24 PM

no but i dont use them with plugs

doc 05-11-2007 08:08 PM

i never NOT use a teaser...i like olive or blue over white decievers...

keeperreaper 05-11-2007 09:28 PM

I think Stetzko caught bertha on a clam because he was trying for cod from shore or atleast thats what I was told.

shadow 05-12-2007 08:30 PM

I just hate teasers all together I never use them.

He caught it using the Rocket Rod, fishing a castmaster on the bottom.

tlapinski 05-13-2007 08:40 AM

As to Bertha, it was on an eel fly ahead of a live eel according to the man himself. There were cod in the area and they used to get the cod on the fly. The eel was for bass, the fly for cod. I guess you really can't predict what will hit what when you are out there. Personally, I seldom use teasers anymore. Never tried one with an eel.
