Penn Squidder Spool Change?
 

I have an older squidder 140, can't figure out how to remove the spool - I take the ballbearing screw cap off, and the spool is loose, but I am missing something - I feel so stupid.. anyone help??

look at the right (handle) side.

find the knob labeled "lift turn"

lift it and turn it counterclockwise. it will unscreww. then, rotate the side plate and housing counterclockwise.

it should now look like this.

the spool will now pull right out. be carefull not to drop the spool if it is plastic (bakelite), because it can crack easily. good luck.

if this doesn't work, bring it into a tackle shop and they should be able to help you. or, you could just give the reel to me. they aren't any good any way! :D

I am just getting back into fishin after a LONG hiatus - this was my late dad's reel from the 70's (sentimental value)- I sent it back to Penn for a tuneup, they put a new metal spool on, I still have the 3 plastic ones and wanted to maybe use all three - Q: he used to run 18lb braided line - what line should I use in the metal spool for Striper fishin??

lightweight alluminum spool? (black) or chrome spool? will you be casting from the beach, or boat fishing?

i use 30# mono on mine for surfcasting. i also use a newell alluminum spool. you can cast with the plastics or the alluminum, but it is hard to control a cast with the heavy chrome spool. if you are boat fishing, the chrome will work fine. now as far as line, you could run anything from 20# up to 50# mono, or one of the new superbraids. i haven't tried the new braids on a squidder, but like it on my abu 6500 rocket. i may be able to help more once i know a little more about what application you will be using the reel for.

It's the black aluminum spool - I didn't ask them for a new spool, they sent me my plastic one back in an envelope and put the black one on without askin me- for the $14 they charged for the spool, I guess it is worth it..? probably mostly beach/bay shore fishing - I have 18lb braided on one plastic spool - maybe set the black spool up with 30 mono, and maybe 17 mono on the third plastic spool for flounder/bottom fishin..?

sounds like a good plan. you may not need the 30# mono from the beach. i use it because i fish around some rocky areas. i also like the extra measure of easyness knowing i have the heavy line. i figure since the reel can handle it, why not use it!

the $14 for the spool seems good. since they did a service on it, what was performed? did they go through everything? new drag washers are the first thing that i would suggest. check the invoice and make sure they did that! if not, get them changed over. let us know how the reel works out! good luck!

I think I need a 145.......but that means another rod. :D

How tough is it to learn to cast these puppies? I'd like to learn conventional, but I'd rather have something that's gonna be bullet proof and heavy enough to make conventional worth it for me. Heavy plugging, bridge/ditch bottom fishing would probably all apply. :smash:

I'm new to the Squidder also. I was told to wrap cotton string 4x around the plastic spool before spooling with mono. It was explained to me that because the mono stretches, it can exert enough pressure on the spool to crack it. The reel holds a ton of line so I did without thinking twice.

I have to say the reel is way cool and casts like a champ for me once I got used to it.
