What's up w/the price of lobsters these days?

What's driving up the price? I've been out of the loop (if there is one)

jim sylvester 05-24-2007 09:03 AM

you using them as bait

spence 05-24-2007 09:04 AM

I think they've really reduced the quotas, there are just not many pots in the water...

memorial day might be kicking them up again, but they did go down from $15 to $9 and nice thing about getting them now is the shells are full of meat, not water.

i'm sure higher gas prices have a little to do with it. need energy to harvest them, right? comms are passing through higher costs.

GattaFish 05-24-2007 09:51 AM

I hope the guys getting them are making the extra $$ not the retailers....

Weak Dollar, Strong Euro.

Plus lower supply, but mainly a fault of our sh!tty currency situation. obvisously if you are an exporter or lobsterman, you don't find the situation so bad.....

Zac,
What percentage of the catch gets exported?

zacs 05-24-2007 01:31 PM

Mike, i'll have to look that one up.

also, because of weak USD, it is more lucrative for canadians to send lobster to EU, which usually help suplement our mkt.

zacs 05-24-2007 01:39 PM

it apears a little over half of the US catch is exported.

there are so many other little factors too. A lot of guys lost a lot of gear in that big storm a couple of months ago, gas is high, etc....

Could well be a combination of the storm and the holiday. I bought lobster about two weeks ago and it was around $7 a pound for jumbos.

Price will drop very soon when the molt starts and it will be all soft shell stuff which is cheaper.

zacs 05-24-2007 08:12 PM

very true.
