Laptop Repairs?
Howdy all!
I've got a 4 year old HP laptop. I believe the power inlet is shot as I cannot get the power cord to work correctly. I tried a new power pack and still, no go. Called HP and they said the port soldered onto the motherboard needs to be changed and that it's not something I can do myself. Anyone know of a reliable, fairly cheap, place that can do this? I was thinking about Best Buy "Geek Squad" but they said it will be over $200. Not sure it's worth that right now, although the thing worked fantastic and never had a problem. Is there somewhere else that could do this? Thanks! |
4 years is a long time old in computer time as far as advancements go...
i'd invest into a new machine if i were you. |
I'd avoid the geek squad. May be time to buy new...

the geek squad sucks
i went there with a PC and i had the full service policy
and they still wanted to charge me like you said -> $200.00 bucks... the thing that pissed me off was...they didnt have the motherboard drivers for a computer they sell... and that ain't right... i had downloaded them to another PC but couldn't find a way to transfer them from one PC to another ...(long story) but finally i took the hard drive out of one PC and installed it in the broken PC as a slave drive... and copied them over that way.... for free... friggan bassturds...at bestbuy. :hs: |
Possible help
Where are you located? I know of a company that might be able to help in Holliston. I can check with them if you'd like. At that age though, I'd consider spending the money on a new one. If you want advice one where to pick one up, feel free to email - happy to help another fisherman.

I was afraid of the responses. Problem is the computer still worked fantastic! I kept it up to date, kept it clean and it's just the power plug thingy. Maybe a little extra cash and I'll have it done. Beats spending $1k for a new one. Was mostly used for ITunes, wife internet surfing upstairs and little projects.
Thanks for the help! |
IMO, I'd back it up and attempt to fix it, or have an electronics guru fix it. Worst case you'll be buying a new PC, but you'd be doing that anyways.
Whats wrong with the connection? Is it not working at all, or is it cutting in and out? |
Crash,
It was working off and on for a while. If you got the plug from the power pack just right, it would power up. got a new power pack, thinking that might be the problem, and it seemed to work better. Now, I can't get power to it. Have not had time to mess around with it in depth yet but will be doing so. Might ask around to see what prices I can get. IMO, $200 beats $1000 or more. Still ran fantastic and miss it. |
Bob I know a guy who repairs laptops and pc's on the side and he's GOOD. The guy does excellent work, I'll make a call and see what his rate is and what the expected turnaroudn is.

Thanks...that would be great! Sorry for the late response. Just got back from a week of non-stop fishing. Put it to you this way....stay home. Less expensive and more exciting :lossinit: |
