A bonehead move
Now I'm all about braving the elements, but going out in a thunderstorm on the end of a jetty next to a large metal beacon, isnt that a bit much.
I was just getting out of work when the storms rolled through the kennebunk/kennebunkport area today, so i figured id watch the storm in my car at the jetty of the kennebunk river. I got out there as bolts of lightning were hitting all around me. To my surprise there were 2 guys at the end of the jetty casting away. I honked at them and tried to wave them in because the storm was right over us. They paid no attention to me. After about 5 minutes of watching these guys one of them turned in and began to walk back to his truck. I rolled my window down and asked him if he had a death wish. About a minute later a bolt struck the flagpole on the point to my left about 500 yards away. This woke the second guy up and he began running to his truck. Now I can see fishing in rain wind heavy surf, but lighting without any shelter? that was just dumb i honestly couldnt see how putting a fish in front of your own saftey. |
Yeah, was a hell of a thunder/lightning show down here too!

i'm still young and stupid. i was even more so when i younger. my mother would drop me off at whitmans pond at 6am on her way to work in the summer. and there i would stay till 8pm. every day. with nothing but a bottle of water and bag of chips. many days storms would roll in and there i would be knee deep fishing. nothing better than a storm to bring out those lunkers. honestly i will still fish in a thunder storm. with my rod tip very very low... side arm casting. but there is a point where even i will (and did when i was younger) say "hey this is a bad idea." and i think from what you described i would have been off that jetty with the first crack of thunder. now that i'm older i have the luxury of fishing from inside a car during those.. :bo:

Looked like a "Darwin Award" winner to me!

Lightning is the one thing that keeps me out of the surf. Scary stuff. :err:
