Letters from Iwo

watched the dvd last night, what do you think?

It was ok IMHO. I though Flags was pretty lousy, this was better but I feel it missed some of the key points from the Japanese side. I think Band of Bros ruined every other war movie for me, I dont know how you can top it. I think the pacific war should get a lot more attention but noone has really done it a great job on it. Not belittling the WWII efforts in Eurpoe, but wagin war on tropical islands, malaria, snakes, stifling heat and a suicidal enemy that ignored all conventional war practices is something that doenst get enough attention. My Dad was a marine and I knew about Iwo Jima when I was @ 5yrs old.

I thought the movie was just OK too, not one I'd run out and buy. The only recent WWII movies that I can think of that take place in the PTO are Windtalkers and Thin Red Line- neither of which measure up to SPR.

If you're looking for a good read, try Flyboys by James Bradley. It's about the radio station at Chichi Jima and our efforts to destroy it and mainland Japan. It also covers the Japanese mentality and brutality they inflicted on themselves and their prisoners.
