The SU 1209 is only good for jigging, or maybe weight and bait. It sucks as a plugging rod.
Don't get me wrong, it's a great jigging rod, but it's got a one track mind. Believe it or not, it fishes and casts much better as a spinning rod. It's way to hard to load with less than 5 oz as a convenmtional. Guys use different mechanics when casting spinning--you can use more of a snap cast. I should caution that my observations are based on the All Star 1209, but my understanding is that the SU and the All Star are virtually identical. |
Lami XRA 1205. Nice all around canal rod. Can be used elsewhere too.

I'm with Saltheart on this one.

should I use a 10 ft or 12ft ,Braid or mono ????
|
10' a 12' at the canal you will just be breaking the tip off trying to cast.
I prefer braid, with a 10' flouro leader, that is just how I do it :tooth: |
I agree with the arra 1205 or a 1201m if you want to do things other than bait. If you are just chunking, one of the glass rods suggested would be good too

never mind... I am a little slow. Mostly plug... big wood? 1205 is good, but i am sure many would recommend the arra 1322. Can't say myself since I don't have one...

I got a SU 1208 about a month ago, and its a good stick, can jig pretty well up to 5oz, and didnt do a bad job lobbing big eels. Its not ideal for eels but worked well in a pinch. Throws wood very nicely, a bit hefty for plastics though. I think it is going to be pretty versatile.

Rainshadow 1209
I have the rainshadow SU 1209 spinning (actually a xmas gift from my lovely wife) and use it only for jigging. Very interesting that it would serve better as spinning, I guess I can understand that but it would take a breakaway cannon or a serious callous to load it without ripping through your index finger. It is a MEAT stick. Not nearly as parabolic as some may like but can effortlessly throw 5 or 6, also doesn't skip a beat when putting the screws to a fish in the current. I am definitely new to the Canal and for the first time this year I don't feel undergunned as opposed to times before. Plugging I use the 1205 and or a 10 ft Ben D - I like them both, but recently got the 1205 and its growing on me.

I thought thread asked for meat stick .. 1322 xra chunker ? waste of talent . 1209 ? 1205 ? no way .. When i think meat, I think glass . 1213m cut down to 9' 2" worked for me .. Slow and parabolic IMHO.. you don't want the speedy recovery of a graphite rod .. you'll be flinging chunks everywhere.. If its for the ditch keep it short too ... A long rod, with that stone bank behind you in most areas,, can be a hinderance .
