Family, fishing and work balance

It’s that time of year again when I have to fight the battle of balance. Striper season is too short, April – December.
I have to make the most of it and keep the rest of my life in bAlanCE. :humpty:
I was asked the other day if I had a job and a family (based on the amount of fishing I do) and I answered yes, on both accounts. I own a direct mail (you may refer to as junk mail) company that occupies 50 hours a week May – September and 70-??? the rest of the year. I have a spouse, however, I do NOT have children. Family is very important to me and my presence is nearly guaranteed at all events.

So how do I manage to put 550 hours on the boat in less than 3 season without trolling.
Typical schedule May – End of Sept.
Monday – Thursday
@ work by 4:00am, home by 5pm, Dinner, and fish at least one night until 9 or so.
Friday on the water by 3am, fish till 8:30am (sh...., shower, shave) at marina then off to work.
Friday evening early dinner out or fishing/picnic dinner on the boat.
Saturday am fish in the EARLY am and go sailing in the afternoon, fish in evening.
Sunday (see Saturday) as well as family dinner with parents/siblings & children.

October-December fish mostly weekends only.

Everything else: I hire professionals to do everything I don’t want to. I look at it this way, businesses pay for my services, and therefore, I should pay other business professionals to do the work I don’t want to do.:nailem:

Yard Work – NO…
Cleaning/Laundry/dry cleaning – lady every week does a better job than I could ever do.
House maintenance is done by professionals
Boat Maintenance – see above
Car Maintenance – see above

I do not do any work around the house. I like to keep the economy flowing by employing other business professionals for their industry expertise. IF I am going to work, I might as well go to work and make money. I am not going to waste my time on things I do not enjoy.:beat:

So I guess that is my answer to balance. It works for me and my family MOST of the time.

Sounds like a well balanced fishing habit.....

I have 2 kids and the wife works weekends. So weekends I am on daddy duty .....I do sneak out to fish but not like I use to ....
Gotta balance but keep family first....

Mr Hunters,
It is a full schedule and keeps me out of trouble. I just love being on/in the water. Fishing, sailing, shellfishing anything that involves being surrounded by salty H2O.

I have a wife and 2 kids ages 2 1/2 & 10. My job takes me from metro Boston to Provincetown and work the occasional nights. Fishing for me happens in the early morning hours 5-7:30am and an occasional after work dinner hour. My wife is understanding about the spring and fall runs but if I'm gone consecutive days and nights she gets a little p.o.'d. My oldest likes to fish but she has better things to do most of the time. Once my little guy gets a little bigger he'll be out with me more and that should give the wife a break. Overall I can't complain but I wish I had more time to fish.

i am always amazed at how people fish the amount they do...i am lucky to have an understanding number one lady who lets me go out a few times during the week in the evenings and once or twice in the early am during the weekends...its enough (barely) to feed my addiction...though it is tough...particulary with 2 kids (3 and 5 )...and a crazy work schedule...
