Another Sluggo thread...

I fish rigged sluggos just bout eveytime i fish and i get tons of hits on em. Thats the problem, i get a ton of hits but the hook up ratio is prolly 5-7:1 fish. Whats the deal, i know some are schoolies, i can feel it. How do you guys set the hook, do you give them a second or so before ya lay into it? Its getting frustrating. 3 hits last night in a row on a less than action packed night and i didnt hook up on the sluggo. Got a couple on eels but the fish were 18-20 inches on 14-16" eels. Weird and frustrating evening. Maybe using mono would be better with the stretch factor but im a slave to braid. Im using a 1207, abu 6500 with 40 lb PP. If that helps...

slug-go and hook ups

Try a 1/0 treble in the rear instead of the single 7/0. I keep a couple with the treble in my bag just in case I get into dinks. The hook up rate increases dramatically.

Hook set

Also, set the hook hard when you get a hit. Cross there eyes as an old timer used to say.

are you fishing it rigged with two hooks? gamis? I find that I miss very few fish on them.

you might want to try throwing a 7.5" double rigged one two, if they're small fish they may just not be getting the 9" into their mouth when they try to inhale it.

Yeah, they are double riged with gamis, 7/0 in front 5/0 in the rear. Maybe i will try the smaller guys, dont know how well they will cast but its worth a shot since ive been stuck in twinkapalooza for the last month.

Why would you want to hook a dink at all... let alone change to treble- hook them??

Maybe another "negative" of the quickly- retrieved 9" Sluggo is that it encourages/ draws Dinks? (at least more so generally than a 3 oz. Danny or A40, or big Needle would?)
