Beginner Surfcaster
 

I live on Long Island, western nassauc county, and I wanna begin to fish from my local beaches, as well as the jetties....I was just wondering if you guys had any suggestions for rod/reel setups, I dont wanna spend like more than a 100, (im a college kid whos broke), and any other tips and advice would b greatly appreciated

P.S. I have fished before in my a life a bunch but mainly freshwater or from party boats and piers

My advice would be to buy some decent used equipment, if your budget is limited. Hopefully someone reading this can offer you something. That would work out much better than new, cheap equipment.

i would get a 10ft ugly stik rod, i have 3 ugly stiks and work great from light tackle to surfcasting, they have good action, durable, and cheap

I agree with the Ugly Stick, and I would pair it with an Okuma reel. They are a great value and will last a long time with minimal maintenance. As with any reel, try not to dunk it too much and rinse it very well with fresh water after every use. The Epixor is very reasonably priced and the whole set up should be within your budget.

I too own an ugly stick (12 foot) w/ an Okuna reel. It is the best bang for your buck. I can cast that thing to Portugal. As far as the advice is concerned; fish at night. Squid is a good beginner bait.

thanks for the advice on the rod/reel, and was also wondering what types of bait/lures would b the best, I kno clam bellies and eels and stuff like that r good options and like poppers for lures but any tips would be appreciated...also how much does the ugly stik cost exactly and where r good places/sites to buy from, and what model okuma reel (remember i dont have much money im not trying to spend more than a 100 for both rod+rel)

I would recommend a 9' Tica and hunt around for a cheap used Penn 704 / 706 (706 has no bail). These are the basics for durability in the surf and you should be able to find both where you are...

For lures get a couple of 7" Mambo Minnows...one of which is Black and the other Olive over white or Yellow over White

Get a 5" Smack-it Popper in White

a couple of 2 oz. Gibbs Pencil poppers, one White, One Yellow over White

a couple of 1 1/2 oz. Superstrike Needles, One White and One Black

a pack of 5" Storm Shads in Pearl or Bunker

This should be good to start your Surfcasting career.....after the addiction kicks in you can expand to the Hundreds of different plugs that everyone has hanging in their Man-Cave :D

I agree with johnR.. tica makes a great lower priced rod. In my opinion the ugly sticks are too soft. Ticas are nice and stiff.

#^&#^&#^&#^&'s has a 9' and a 10' surf casting rod and reel combo, both great for the price... I think 89$ cork handle... a good start. the 9' will probably be a better all around rod... the 10' can cast a lot farther, but can be a bit iring when making many cast with lighter plugs... the 10' is great for throwing bait and a 3 oz sinker with 20lb mono line. Youre where I was 3 years ago, and I still use the 10' okuma...

im in search of my first striper and feel this is the best way to go about it and to keep catching them, ive caught a bunch of blues but never a striper
