The scent of a woman (bass)

The scent of a woman, OK bass, but seeing as we tend to target bigger ones, then female bass.

Is it real?

Can you smell them?

What happens when you can smell them but the action is still weak?

Smelled some last night for about 15 minutes but had one small 10-12# fish and a couple whacks somewhere in RI on snakes to show for it.

i can smell them for sure. i believe that when you briefly smell them there are either very few fish or that they may be passing thru. when i smell them for extended periods of time i believe they're thick and i usually catch.....but with the season i'm having what do i know....:err:

You guys need to shower more often:bl2:

I smell bluefish when they feed (that melon like smell) but bass ?hmmmmm. Well when you land them they have a mild smell that is unique but otherwise I don't detect anything .

Sometimes I can smell fish in the water and other times, well, it is just me!!!LOL'S!!!

Biteme 07-18-2007 05:16 PM

I have smelled them several times, in the surf, all at night, but I don't think I have ever caught more than a few when it happens.

tattoobob 07-18-2007 05:29 PM

Oh Ya You can smell them, I do all the time

Slipknot 07-18-2007 05:29 PM

Out on the cape there are distinct smells when you can tell it's bass. Lately though all I smell out there is seal breathe:rocketem: and believe me, there is a difference in that smell, they wreak.

I've had the smell of bass wake me from a sound sleep. Run down grab a rod and be on. Hasn't happened in some time. Now I can smell them ocasionally if I'm on the beach.

fishpoopoo 07-18-2007 06:29 PM

people tell me i'm crazy when i tell 'em i can tell if there are bass or blues around by telltale beach "smells" ... but it's true if you've put enough time on the water.

MarshCappa 07-18-2007 06:47 PM

I see dead people too!:err:

Finaddict 07-18-2007 08:31 PM

You can smell them ... but in the past few years, hasn't been as frequent or reliable for fishing action ... but it's time on the water like referenced above, that makes the difference.

You smell the bait getting eaten, or more likely the oil of the bait getting eaten.

Its a great scent isn't it? :uhuh: I love cruising along and suddenly that smell hits you. Never catch anything, but I love the smell of fish. :jump1:

This is so funny, I read this last night before heading out. Doing a little memory recall when reading it thinking to myself yeah I remember instances like that. Anyway I am at a spot and took several casts nadda, moved over a little bit fairly close to where I had laid a fish on the rocks that I was taking home for the table 2 nights previous and now I'm smelling striper. I think nah couldn't be as hard as it rained yesterday. A couple of casts later I hooked up.

You can smell them if they are out there and the wind , etc is still enough. If its blowing hard the smell must get carried away but many a calmer night , you definitely can smell the fish.

I guess the technical term would be Striper Farts! :)

Piscator 07-19-2007 11:34 AM

smells like a cross between watermelon and cucumbers to me - I love it

eelskimmer 07-19-2007 11:42 AM

What scent??

I have been told by at least one old timer that the smell is almonds.
I have have one or two instances of a sweet smell on a calm night
that was closer to anisette. Lasts only a mimute or two and I
believe it is chewed up bait rather than Stripers, or maybe a combination. Anyone else able to put a recognizable scent to it.
Okay, Sambucca, Drambuie etc etc.
