Something that I saw
 

Of extreme interest last weekend.
Are you ready for this? A BICYCLE on the sand. Freaked me out. On a backside beach in Truro I saw a guy riding a bike. Aired down. The thing looked like it had motorcycle tires. And he climbed a hill right next to me and Mikey. I heard no huffing and puffing - all of a sudden , there he was. His trail faded of into the distance toward Longnook. No footprints like he was pushing. I think that there might be a futere in this. No more 150$ permits that are good for nothing. Just pedal away. I have my son, Noak who works at Providence Bicycle looking into this for me.:jump:

Fred, I mentioned on one of the closed beach threads that I need to get a bike for the sand. If the tires only need to be the size of motorcycle tires, then that is great. Maybe some modifications and some welding here and there and it would work.

There's a guy who regularly rides the beach at Plum Island. It looks like the bike was made for real wide tires and he zips along without getting stuck. Hmmmm maybe we can rig em like a canal bike. Rods plugs and any gear you chose to drag along. :think: :think:

i saw one recently
 

seems they are (were) kids bikes origionally,
yet only the rear tire was wide
like a honda 90 width size tire
and it had a mini banana seat too..

i think to air down the tires a bit
and to use them in the sand it would
be great if they had like...
just five gears instead of ten and up...

Or you could just use the humvee of mountain bikes, designed to ride through sand and snow, tires are 4-inches wide ... just copy the link and it will bring you to the site ... it's a review of this cool mountain bike that rode across a desert in Australia with deep sand.

Very interesting. Then if the Feds do charge for a permit for a "beach bike", I wondering if they will make you carry a list of emergency gear like they make us carry in our 4 x 4 's now for driving on the sand.

The ride down Cardiac Hill would be exciting.

it's very interesting because I always thougt you would need much fatter tires to ride the sand...but if they say it works and that dude rode it it through a desert, it must work. I have a feeling that it's not as easy as riding a canal cruiser.. I'm sure you have to push a little harder

works in snow too. Now, how do you get back UP that dune!!!

I'd be more worried getting back up cardiac, than down it...

I want to build this but more fishing friendly. I have a few old Mnt bike frames I can cut up, It could be a good winter project :uhuh:

They charge for a bike to use the Reserve at Plum Island! Now I ask, do you think the CCS would miss out on that revenue??:hee: :hee:

Back in the 60s we use to ride ballon- tired bikes, single speed, most of the air out, on Salisbury Beach. (think the bikes were 1940s vintage) Once is a while we'd get stuck but for the most part they worked suprisingly well. Haven't thought about it in years. Wish we had had these. They look remarkable for the task at hand.

There was an article in the LI Fisherman several years ago about a guy who rigged a mountain bike for Montauk. But, the sand out there is all hard gravel and cobble.
