Modem question

A week or so ago during a thunder storm my daughter lost power. When it came back on the computer booted up fine but only got static through the modem (dial up). My first action was to replace the modem. No good, the new modem wouldn't detect the dial tone either. I then moved the modem to all four open slots thinking the slot may have fried. No go. Two modems in all five expansion slots won't work. Phone cable is good and phone works perfect plugged into it. Any suggestions?

What operatinig system? Could be you have to completely remove and reinstall the old modem with the new modem.

Did the system recognize the new modem on boot?

Check it out through the control panel and go to system - go to modem under hardware - device manager. It should show up there.

Good luck

get a battery back up power supply
for that unit...

then when the lights go out the computer is still
on (up and running)

they'll give you an additional 45 minutes to power down
computers until the storms pass over...

I'm not sure that would have made a difference in this case. While the machine and monitor power were protected the surge came through the phone line. Phone line surge protection sure would have helped though.

you didnt flip the line in and tel cords, if you're using both, at the back of the modem by any chance?
