SWC on Tues 8/7

Decided to head to SWC and heard that guys got them at first light so left the driveway at 3 in hopes of getting there early enough. Headed to Green Harbor which I've never launched out of and Mapquest directions were wrong and with the dense fog couldn't find it for a bit. Motored out real slow to the ocean in thick fog, then took our time to the bank. So much for 1st light!

Trolled around for a couple hours whales, bait everywhere. Saw 2 BIG tuna bust right behind our bars way back but they never hit. Trolled that area for awhile and never saw any again.

Couple hours later ,we tried jigging high and low to get one to hit. Nothing but dogs. Then this little guy came out of no where, came up to the boat and wanted to jump in. Stayed with us till we motored off.

So we trolled some more and jigged some more to no avail. Decided to head back. On the way back in, saw a pod working. Motored up to them slow and got our spinning gear out. My buddy got hooked up real quick and it was off to the races. He fought the fish for close to 50 mins and then we boated it. Fish taped out to 48" My buddy was stoked! Had one other break off but couldnt get tight again. All in all it was a great day!

Great job on landing that sweet fish!! When the fish are busting behind the gear like that drop back the spreader bars OR jig the rod if they arent in the riggers. Sometimes that will entice them to come get the bait. Another thing to do is change course a little 30 degrees or so. The change in angle also sometimes gets them to jump on. Again great job. Congrats to your buddy.

NICE!!! - trolling all day for not then landing that fish is great enroute home.

IMHO Fighting that fish is 100 times better on the spinning rod than on a bar. Nice job approaching the pod and landing the fish.

NICE, I can't wait to take one on spin gear....:musc:

Your buddy looks like Spencer Tracy in the "old man and the sea".

Nice catch!

Thanks Guys. He has an old diawa reel with 30 lb braid on a 9ft lamiglass custom stick. I thought the reel was gonna explode on the 1st run but it held up well. It's his largest fish on a spinning rod.

Thanks for the tips on the bars Matt, I'll have to try them out

Nice. Really nice. That's makes up for the rest of the day. The pup was cute. Looks likes he was begging for lunch. Congrats on the day, great report.

Good for you guys Jeff, you just never know when a tuna will bite, some say early morning is best, But sometimes its just getting in front of one the right way no matter what time of day it is. We will be headin out tomorrow on another guys boat. Hopefully we will get hooked up as well. Congrads!!!
