Tagged fish?

What's the deal with a tagged fish? A buddy tells me he got $500 for a 36" tagged fish that was from a hatchery? Says the amount was based on age and weight. Anyone know the skinny on this?

It's usually a raffle of sorts. If you send in a tag it could be anywhere from 5 to 1000 bucks, incentive to get the tags returned. Who was the tag from? There was probably 50 different tagging programs but one from a hatchery would be pretty interesting. I didn't even know of any "Striper" hatcheries...

your friends fish must of had a usfw tag, they have a lotto type draw in jan or feb i think 5-1000 your friend must of hit the 500 one. all tags returned are eligible.

looked at a certificate i got from a tag return and it does say wild or hatchery, hatchery of origin so i take it as there are more than one hatchery, some say you can by the lines,if they are broken the fish is from a hatchery. i really don't know but i'm sure there should be some more in put.

keep those lines tight

I got one last year and sent it up to Maine. 'Never even got a response and it's still not listed on their website as a returned tag.
