Newbie Thru-Wire Question
Hello all,
Recently got into plug making, glad I found this site. Sounds like a dumb question, maybe so. Can anyone offer tips on how they get the wire from end to end of a wood plug? Is long drill bit the only way? Tips? Thanks. |
Howdy. There are many ways. I use the lathe and go from each end and meet in the middle. That way you can use a shorter bit and avoid the drill walking. You can also use a drill press, hand drill, etc... In a nutshell my preference is to start on each end and meet in the middle using what ever you want to drive the bit instead of 1 long drill and trying to go thru the whole thing.

I use a jig to hold the plug vertically and drill into both ends with a regular bit, then finish the middle by hand with a long bit. Just go slowly and be sure to clean out the shaving frequently.

Good advice. Thanks folks!

One tip I could offer is to drill your hook holes first then drill from each end until you connect with the hook hole. If your off a slight bit you still should be able to finagle the wire thru. I use a drill press with a center button point. I adjust for plug length and use a long bit to center the button point each change of plug length.

Thanks for the warning! I have a drill press I haven't used in 100 years and will clean up for the task. biglove |
Put the chuck in the head stock of your lathe. Drill in from both ends using a live center in the sliding tail stock as a guide. Connect with a log bit in a cordless.
