Rod holders for pickup
What kind of rod holders do you use on your pickup?
|
I have them mounted on top of my truck box, angled up enough to keep em off the tailgate...
|
Most guys I know make one out of scrap wood or plywood. Cut 2 triangular pieces of wood and then drill a flat board on one side of them to place the rod holders on. Make it wide enough that it fits behind the wheel wells and it will stay in place. Should point the rods at a 45 degree angle out the bed of the truck.
|
Do you point the rod tips forward or backwards?
I came across a bunch of 2" stainless steel tube that I'm thinking would make a Kick-A$$ rod holder. I got a ton of the stuff |

i can't remember what angle i used but some quick trig will tell you. figure a 10 foot rod and you want the tips 4ft? higher than the bed. This way you can still go through the dunk drivethru. just us a 2x8 to cut the triangles and the middle. then buy plastic 3pack rod holders for BW. They are less than $5. |

Basic rocket launcher - $20 to $25 worth of 1 1/2-inch PVC and fittings. Slides right under my tool box and keeps the rod tips about 8-inches over my tailgate. I offset my rod tubes to one side so I have no problem sliding my kayak in the bed. Overall dimensions are 34" across, 19" deep and 8" high (on the elevated end). Each rod tube is 26" long. Notch the end of each tube to slide the reel into so the reel doesn't bounce around. I use it for fresh and saltwater rods from 6-feet to 10-feet, no problem....

Nice work, Basshunter.

I just rebuilt mine. The basics with the racks are by Thule. On the front I use the ski racks. On the back I had 8" x 50" oak planking with PVC attached. The oak split, so I bought 1/2 " clear plastic and clamped the oak to it down cellar, and drilled the same holes. Reattached the pvc, replacing some that looked like crap, and voila, brand new. I thought it might be light using the plastic, but it really isn't much lighter. Looks better with the plastic than the wood.

Here's mine, hold ten rods and the hold bent butt 80's perfectly as well. Made of 2x4's & PVC pipe.

If you have a plastic bed liner and 2X8 or 10 and some plastic rod holders and you off to the races!
