Herring in SoCo???

Last night we saw what LOOKED like herring in the shallows. Same profile as herring, definitely NOT bunker. Any ideas on what it could be? We didn't think and herring would be around this late... Any ideas???

SeaWolf 09-06-2007 08:15 AM

most likely hickory shad. they are in the inlets and beach fronts from summer - fall.

JFigliuolo 09-06-2007 08:17 AM

didn't look like shad. thinner profile... could be though.

spence 09-06-2007 08:22 AM

Not herring, but I can't believe how thick the silversides have been along the shore this week. No bass though :zup:

mullet maybe? I know its early

piemma 09-06-2007 09:32 AM

Not too early for Mullet. usually 9/10 to 9/15 in Weakapaug.
I'd say Mullet

piemma 09-06-2007 09:33 AM

BTW, 6" Broken back bomber in Chicken Scratch color is killer when the Mullet are in.

RIROCKHOUND 09-06-2007 09:39 AM

Shhh

JFigliuolo 09-06-2007 09:45 AM

These looked to be 8-10" long. Bigger than mullet.

SAXATILUS 09-06-2007 09:57 AM

Northern senett??

JFigliuolo 09-06-2007 09:59 AM

Nope NS are thinner than this was. I definitely had the shape of herring. Like the geniouses we are, when we got back to our cars my partner realizes he could have snapped some pics with his Optio... :whackin:

jim sylvester 09-06-2007 10:25 AM

I say mullet

Joe,

cheferson 09-06-2007 12:34 PM

I saw a guy get some 5" herring the other day on a sabiki

Scrounger 09-06-2007 03:06 PM

Smelts??

basswipe 09-06-2007 03:49 PM

Every bluefish I've caught in the past week down my way has been coughing up 3"-5" herring.

Krispy 09-06-2007 03:52 PM

butterfish

shadow 09-06-2007 04:21 PM

they were not mullet or snappers that I know for sure.Have seen plenty of alwives before and would say that these to were alwives all of 8"to 10" easy. The only thing that makes me doubt it is the time of year.Maybe someone opened a pond or closed stream?Maybe they were very small shad?as odd as it is I still think herring.

RIROCKHOUND 09-07-2007 07:30 AM

Chef,
at a spring squid spot?
We used to be able to fill a bucket with tinkers, snappers and sea herring there as a kid/teenager.... havent seen tinkers in years....
great supply of fluke bait.

guess they could have been herring?
Heard rumors of sardines around as well.

No over near you. Got a bunch of tinkers where your thinking the past few falls, there still there.
