Eeling Stick

Looking for recomendations for a Good eeling rod in the 10' - 10.5' range for throwing snakes. any suggestions would be great

Lami gsb 1201m or 1201L depending on the size of the eels and how much backbone you need for fighting fish.

Clogston29 09-12-2007 09:43 AM

gsb 1201m, without a doubt

great for just about everything else too

has pretty decent balls but will throw under an ounce in a pinch, I've thrown a rebel jumpin minnow with mine and BM cowboys - very versatile

tough blank too.

The Dad Fisherman 09-12-2007 10:04 AM

I was looking at the 1201L but the 1201m looks a little beefy....its rated for lures up to 12 oz. seems like overkill....how "soft" is it for working the smaller stuff?

took the words right out of my mouth

this blank will put a old fashion whipping to any bass in the water

132 1L cut to 10' is a good stick as well...light as a feather...a little faster than the 1201 m...but a good eels stick as well

Lami SSU 1201mh very similar feel to the gsb1201m, but slightly smaller diameter, feels great for the bigger snakes........

handles 4-5 oz.....I don't push more than that

lamis are all overrated when it comes to how much they can handle

performs the best at 2.0-3.5 oz

is that the blue blank

had one in my hands at the SWE show and it felt good.....a little faster than the 120 1 m

TDF, don't like the 1088 for eeling anymore? I love mine...and it whupped that 30 fairly easily... maybe I don't know what I"m missing though with a 10 footer...

Oh no I still love my 1088 but it did seem to struggle a little when using some of the larger snakes.

Clogston29 09-12-2007 10:36 AM

not as versatile and much heavier than the 1201m, but if you want something that will cast just about anything (throws a 5 oz pikie like its nothing), handles medium to large snakes well, and will whip a 45# fish in no time - look at the lami sbh 1213m.

riverrat2 09-12-2007 10:39 AM

GSB1201m, I have an SSU120m as well and it is a bit to light for the eels I like to fish. Would be willing to trade it for a GSB if anyone wants to.

That is why i got the SSU1201mH :hihi:

what about tossing eels in the canal? Which rod is better to fight the fish in that current?

I am using a 1204 right now but have a feeling that I will lose fish using it in the canal.

Rockport24 09-12-2007 11:33 AM

ya know now you guys are going to make me get another rod!! my wife is going to kill you guys

riverrat2 09-12-2007 11:39 AM

1201m has the balls to stop fish in the canal, some of the guys I fish there with use the 1205 to eel as well.

snake slinger 09-12-2007 04:01 PM

I have a gsb1321L cut from the bottom to ten feet and it is a good eel rod and it will cast the larger eels.

Lami GSB 120 1M is the rod to go with
I have that rod and I plug with it up to 3-1/2 oz pencils and down to 1 ounce plastic swimmers if I have to.
great eeling rod
I will be tossing some rubba with it this weekend

MikeCC made mine and did a pissa job and got it to me 2 days before out cutty trip last fall.

it does NOT toss up to 12 ounces, you may have mixed it up with the fiberglass lami sb121 3m, I have that also and it wears bass down fast in the canal when I use it.

Clogston29 09-13-2007 07:39 AM

Lami rates it to throw 12, thats crap. Its 1-4, maybe 5 if you don't lay into it.

The only thing I don't like it for is sluggos. That's were I'd go with its cousing, 1081m.

SeaWolf 09-13-2007 08:48 AM

the gsb1201m is probably one of the most versatile blanks i build on. i've built it as a spinner and caster. you can plug and eel with it and it handles a wide range of lure weight, with 1-4 being the optimum, 1.4-3.5 about perfect.

however, if you are going to be consistantly throwing up to 5 ounces with it, you may want to look at the sb1213m, xra1261mh, rainshadow sw1209 or su1209/1208. you'll want a rod that can handle the high end better than just lobbing it at the high end.

Steve K 09-13-2007 09:14 AM

I have both the 1201l and 1201m. The 1201l is my favorite eel rod especially if you cannot get large eels. It handles large eels too. You will cast more eels off with the 1201m if you are not careful.

Vogt 09-13-2007 10:24 AM

This is very interesting because I'm having a custom done this winter. Clogston, was it the 1201m you dont like for sluggos? Would the 1201L be a better choice for that application?

I fish both sluggos and eels alot often in the same night, and I would like a rod that could do both fairly nicely.

Clogston29 09-13-2007 10:26 AM

I don't like 10' rods for sluggos, too heavy for how I like to fish them. the 1201m casts sluggos fine, as does the 1201L. the 1081m fishes sluggos great IMO.

decksweeper 09-13-2007 10:36 AM

I have the1201L and the 1201M...Loved the 1M until I fished the 1L...other than to mix it up, I don't really see myself pulling the 1M off the rack. Throws any size eel and is a lot lighter than the 1M.

Vogt 09-13-2007 11:07 AM

Personally, I dont mind sluggos with a 10'. A 9' is deffinately better, but there are some place I just dont want a 9'. I generally throw 1-3oz plugs, sluggos, and medium eels. It sounds to me like the 1201L would be the best choice??? Sorry for all the questions, this will be my first custom, so I want to gain as much info as possible.
