Outer Cape Cod Beaches
Anyone know if the ocean beaches of Truro and Wellfleet are still plagued by mung weed? I'm planing to fish these beaches (at night) this week (October 22nd-25th) using the Hab's lures I purchased at auction to benefit John's widow Jessica and son John, Jr.
Any up-to-date info on MUNG conditions for the outer cape beaches would be appreciated. Thanks, guys. Bill Brett |
The beaches are all pretty clean. The fishing is good but the catching all year has been worse then any year since they invented eels.

Clean from High Head to the race, but the mung could move into High Head quickly - there is a bunch trapped between the beach and the bar, and High Head has been dirty more often than not since July. As a general rule for the year, the further north you move the cleaner it gets.

Thanks, guys. I'll let you know if I catch any decent fish there this week.

seals
i just got back from a 3 day trip to nantucket. i'm not sure if it's of any value, but the whole island was littered with seals. i covered alot of the coast, and they were everywhere!

Seals only eat sand eels - ask Audubon. And the ones on the Cape are friendly.

I won't say where I was last night but there were lots of little fish there and no one on the sand track after dark. Doesn't anyone on the outer Cape fish after dark anymore?

By it Karl! Gets awful lonely but boy the outer beach with no one else on it under a a growing moon is just an awfully beautiful place and so peaceful, it sucked having to leave so I could be, yuk, at work this morning with a modicum of sleep. |
If you're that lonely, just head east a mile or so.

You guys are KILLING me!! I remember when we could run from the Mission Bell to High Head and maybe see a couple of other trucks. I quit in 03 when I couldn't find a place to park at Peaked Hill Bar.
You telling me it's like "old times"????:ss: |
Fished the outer Cape yesterday, Tuesday Oct. 23rd. Arrived in Wellfleet around 1:30 P.M. and began my usual scouting mission to determine which ocean beach to fish after dark. Wellfleet beaches badly fouled with mung (low tide at 3:30 P.M.), less so the Truro ocean beaches. Maybe at high tide the mung disperses but the Truro beaches were not fishable yesterday, at least not for a surfcaster.
Drove up to Race Point. Parked in the Race Point parking lot (I don't have a beach permit) to take a look around. BLITZ IN PROGRESS!! Mostly stripers, a few blues, feeding on peanut bunker. Tons of fish right in the wash, right at the parking lot. Ideal daytime fishing conditions: cloudy, wind blowing southwest at 25 knots, sun setting in one hour. Caught, tagged, and released several smaller bass to 15 pounds on teaser and popper when it happened. I let down my guard and grabbed a hooked bass by its lip instead of grabbing and securing the plug first. Using a yellow popper with treble hooks. One jerk of the fish's head and I had a treble hook embeded in my left thumb. I crush the barbs on every hook I use but there's usually a small stub remaining, just enough to keep a hook from being easily backed out. I tried to removbe hook myself on the beach but no luck. I was forced to walk off the beach at the height of the blitz. Spent the evening driving to Hyannis for medical treatment. Lesson learned. I could see only a handful of fishermen on the beach at Race Point yesterday afternoon (maybe 8 men). Tourists outnumbered fishermen 4 to 1. Just a few cars in the parking lot. When (If!!) the mung disappears I'll be back to fish the Truro beaches at night. The next windy day I'll be back at Race Point. |
Ah, so it's kinda like the old days.
You know, you tend to remember the "goods" night and forget the "bad" ones. I can remember, even in the hay days, getting skunked on "The Back" more than once. |

I listed my skiff in the classifieds recently and got no bites. A guy from NJ is coming up tomorrow to buy it unless someone local(which I prefer) buys it. I used in Chatham a few times and it was perfect. Fun and versitle boat. http://www.striped-bass.com/Stripert...Carolina+Skiff |
