VS Reels

I'm looking at the VS150 anyone have any thoughts on this reel?

Application will be to cast into structure from boat but may occasionally do some shore fishing - primarily will be throwing top water stuff or swimmers

Also, any suggestion on rods to match. I'm assuming I'd be looking at something in the 7' range, throwing 15 -20 lb test.

Also, based on this scenario is the 150 sufficient or should I be considering the 200? And are they worth the $$$?

a vs 150 would b fine from a boat & shore......7' rod on the boat is good, but I would think u will need something around 9' for the shore. 1 reel 2 rods, then u have everything covered.

on the rod end......batson 967 or 1088 cut down for the boat, and a1087 or 1088 for the beach......these u will not find fact. made, but would have to get them made by a rod builder near u.[my 2 cents].

SHHHHHH!!!!

I've already been yelled at once by a board member about advertising those reels until said board member can find a way to sneak it into the house so it doesn't seem like he's spending too much money. I think if he hides it in behind the brand new lathe, brand new duplicator, 3 brand new fishing rods, brand new pistol, brand new belt sander, brand new spray booth, and the brand new bumper fluid recycler he's purchased in the past month, he'll be OK.

Not to mention any names but.... Hey Bill, you gonna buy that stinkin' reel or what?

BTW - I have an 8' St Croix cut down 6 inches off the butt which is a sweet boat rod using a Stradic 4000... Roughly comparable to the Batson 967 that CS mentions.

I have both the VS 150 and VS 200. They are both highly versatile reels and worth the money. The 150 is ideal for 7 and 8 ft rods but I find it to be a bit small for all but the lightest 9 footers. In my opinion, a 1088 blank is better balanced with a VS 200. There is a lot of talk lately about matching the 150 to a 9ft XRA 1083 (9ft Ron Arra). I havent tried that so I cant offer any comment. I dont know how much or what type of shore fishing you do, but you might want to consider an 8ft rod that is dual purpose for shore or boat. The 8ft St Croix Ben Doerr is a great rod for both application, either as a custom rod or as a factory rod. Another choice might be the Allstar 968 which has a ton of power, but is still very comfortable to fish.

Thanks guys, very helpful. I am looking at the reels over at The Sportsman's Den - I just want to make sure the warranty is transferable before plunking down the money.

Thanks again

bummer

OliverNBPT 09-13-2002 09:09 AM

Geez, you guys are making me feel bad.

To keep hope alive, I'm most likely going to pick up the VS150 and not the VS200

FYI - in order to transfer the warranty you have to pay to have the reel serviced $37.00 and must pay for any additional parts required to bring the reel back to a condition that VS will warranty - sort of subjective. Moving forward you will have to pay $37 annually for maintenance or can do it yourself by ordering the kit, not sure on cost.
