I have heard of fish opening them also but maybe that is the imitation clips aka chinese junk fake ones

I use them and stopped a seal with 25 pounds of drags with 65 lb whiplash, the clip did not open, the braid broke

Ummm, from the picture, the Breakaway may be upside down... the angled end should be pointing up and the horizantal cross piece on the bottom - away from the knot...

Slap me with the idiot stick! lol...Thats the way I thought they were supposed to be tied. :call:

ridler, I don't even thing that makes a difference as to why it bent like that but we always tie them the other way, it's easy to change a plug then. If it bent that way , it would have bent the other way too.:uhuh:

no slip that's the 60. 80's were sold out. I swapped from a danny to a snagger when I saw poagies present. Took the poagie and the snagger off after a long battle in the yak. Couldn't get the poagie fast enough back to the heavy rod. The snagging set up was a stradic 5000, 20lb power pro and 40lb Flouro leader.

Wow, the harbor is on fire in late October.

I always us the big rod for snagging, just for that reason

Backwards agree.
Look at the end of a good clip, the small section that is bent at 90 degrees. Well the plug w/ fish should not past point of the horizontal wire therefore it should not bend (less leverage). However, the opposite side there will be more leverage if the lure w/fish moves up the clip.

I have never had a problem ,BUT have noticed recently on a couple of plugs I throw . (small cup nose needle ).. The clip will get hung up agianst the lure ,kinda stuck ,kitty corner.. I imagine with a heavy fish on,, leverage against the lure in this jammed up position would not be good .. I watch for it now and break free any clip hang ups before I throw .. but like I said, it probably happens on only a couple of lures ..

Don't feel bad. A week or so ago, even after using them now for 3 years, I had a brain fart and tied one on upside down. I went to lift a small fish up, and a 3 oz jighead fell right off the clip. The fish swam away trailing the jighead and the 9" Sluggo attached to it :hs:

I've never had a problem with the 80# clip. I run about 12-15 pounds of drag on a Saltiga 6000 for Canal fishing. 50# Big Game or Cortland braid. Not one snap failure with the 80# clip.

IMO, the 60# clip might be rated accurately for 60# break strength, but the 80s are way underrated. They have to be at least as strong as a size 34 Coastlock.

Id say that the clip worked just fine. Your drag washers however should be applauded for doing far more than should be expected. :claps:

I have not had that happen - ever. With the small link I have bent somewhat because I was trying to shoehorn it onto a plug that it wouldn't fit...

I have never had an issue with the 80# clips! Been using them on every cast for 4 years......and I re-use them over and over! Take them off a beat leader and re-use! Its amazing how many people tie them on wrong....sure it is an easy thing to do! I wonder when they will make them with a closed eye for easier use????:huh::tm::smash:

When I first started, I tied em that way thinking that's how they should be and that there was less chance for the lure to come off. I would lift the squeare part a litlle with my nail and slip em on. One day I tied it and noticed I had on in the way I thought it was "backwards" and noticed how much easier it is to change lures. Never considered it would impact chance of failure... not sure if it does. Just know you aren't the only one :)

When the spin link fisrt came out they had a rating of 30 lbs. Last year they brought it up to 50 lb and now they are showing 60 lb :smash:

It should go back to the the original rating of 30 lb

and if you have any of the small ones, put them with your fresh water gear, they won't hold up to large bass.

Now I see why it bent, a snag hook attached with the small clip then a pogie gets crushed by a bass large enough to do that :hs: :( too bad you didn't tie direct. Loosen your drag a touch I'd say. Those small clips I don't even use for schoolies.

I only use the small ones.
I use a 60# leader
I use 20# fireline
The Fireline breaks at the single palomar
I have yet to have a clip fail.
I guess I need to go down in the shop and hook one up to my hi tech testing apparatus and find out if I can break it.
I think I will hook it up to a 54 Duolock and see which fails first.

Looks like it was tied correctly. Look at the example of the barrel swivel attached to the link. The line should be tied to the end where the barrel swivel is.

Think of the barrel swivel as the plug, and the knot goes on the other end

All remaining 60lb class clips have gone in the barrel. I should have tied the snagger direct. It's one of those things when you just come by and say, "Oh Sh*t, Poagies!", and take the plug off and put on the snagger quickly. If it did it on the snagger it would have done it on a plug. Drag was not an issue here on a little 5000 Stradic.
