My tackle locker project
 

Well, I've decided that my boat needs more storage, well, who's doesn't, but I really liked the leaning post tackle stations on the newer WCs, and to buy one is out of the question.

here is my idea of what the finished product will become.

So I've begun the project and started taking measurements, 2 and 3 times to ensure it was going to be the right size. I figure a simple box should do and cover it with fiberglass and gel coat, making it look nice, hopefully somewhat professional.

Here's some pics of where I'm at.

I think the next step is to build the compartment that will hold my plano boxes. Install that, glass work, gel coat.............

And for the skeptics who don't believe that 10 planos will fit.......

That's gonna be a very functional and good looking tackle center. Good work. :musc:

I made mine out of starboard

all screwed toghter and works great!! Bottom draw has all sinkers, 2nd draw has hooks in 35 mm cases and floro carbon line then 3 palanos have all tackle.

Where did you find the hinge for the door? I really like that style and was hoping to use something like that.

That's a stainless steel piano hinge I donated to MJ's tackle project. I had it left over from a previous project of my own. I'm pretty sure I ordered it through McMaster-Carr.

Great ideas on both projects. I made a similar box to fit over the battery compartment on the rear right of my CC. One thing I have to add is the storage for the plano's definately needs shelves. Stacking 'em on top of each other sucks, period.

I was going to make the shelves as shown. Tabs, not full shelves.

But yes, mine should be winterized by next week. Its too bad we never hooked up, but I guess theres always next year. I'm trying to get my boat in Gloucester for next year. Should be alot closer to the fish.

Trying for one more trip out east this week upcoming. If I go I'll pm you. Lost your #. I'd like to go out with 3 total. We'll have to find one more. If it doesn't happen I'm done with the tuna and will go spot hopping for cod.

So to update, I scratched the starboard shelving unit and opted for a less expensive option, this plano shelf thing I found at Walmart for $15. I am now going to see how nice I can make this for as absolute little as possible. with those in place, I am ready to start glassin'.

Yup. Black lexan with stainless perko latches. Just like the other hatches.

started the glass work. I'm just gonna take it slow, so one side at a time. I think that I used too much resin though, are you supposed to use a can per side? well its only 2/3 of a small can. Oh well, I'll try using a bit less on the other sides.

In doing so, I think I would have to improve my initial design a little, but no biggy. Only have two or three small air bubbles on the edges. I think thats good considering.......

Hopefully get the front and one side done tomorrow. I'll post pics when I've got it all glassed up.

from my trial and error.

cut the side out, give yourself a little extra.

put the cutout mat on some cardboard and use a thin foam roller to wet the matt. then place it on the side you are glassing and roll from the middle out. up, down, left and right. once it starts to cure a little you can take the tip of a brush (throw away brush) and kind of punch at any air bubbles untill they go away.

your gonna want to sand those bubbles out if lumps will bother you.

you should be able to do that whole box glass then extra coats with a gallon.

did the glassin outside and let it sit for over an hour before I brought it in and put the heat lamps on it. Kinda smelly, I'm not gonna lie. So outside it went over night and now its fine.
The side I did the glass work on only has a few little areas that need to be sanded, otherwise its smooth as a........well you know. I'll sand down the few spots then do a second layer of the mat to make it stronger. There should be a fair amount of overlapping as I cover the sides and such, so I'll have to reevalute the situation as I progress.

whats the coldest temp you can do fiberglass work?

as cold as you want I think. It just messes with the cure time. what are you doing tomorrow? Half day of work perhaps? Call me later
