What do you gents think about a rebuild as a first attempt?...

I picked up an 11' Lamiglas SB1363M recently that I am expecting to arrive next week. the rod is used & has wear at the base of it, & seems like a great candidate for a rebuild!

Do you know the difference between a rod used for spinning vs that of a conventional?... because I would like to work this rod if possible, for conventional use.

I'm not exactly sure what it's geared for currently...

Saltheart 09-19-2002 10:26 AM

Yu might want to just use it the way it is Don. If its a spinner , changing it to conventional would mean moving the guides and probably buying new style guides. Lot of work and expense to put into an old blank. The old blond Lami fiberglass blanks are very popular and that one will be a great bait chucker. If its a spinner , just use it that way.

My experience has been that after all the time and effort and expense building a rod , you are disappointed if you don't start with the blank you really wanted in the first place. Undoing a perfectly functional spinner to make it a conventional is not a good use of your time. Now if its falling apart and needs a lot of work anyway , and the guides are cracked , etc , then it may be worth rebuilding to salvage the blank. It is a classic rod blank. I believe that at one time , the Lami SB 1213M and the SB1363M were the most popular blanks among serious striper fisherman. We're looking back to about 1977 but they were the Cat's Meow then.

THE only thing u need to be aware of on old glass blanks is that they haven't been sitting out in the sun for a long time. AS they will go bad. PUT all that time in rebuilding an old-old blank, it just MITE brake on u.....the glass gets brittle/soft. HAVE someone in a tackle shop look at it first[ if u can] before u by it.

DRUMCORPFAN 09-20-2002 08:27 AM

Cool, I would like to attend. :D

tlapinski 09-20-2002 09:00 AM

i may be down to attend. got a handfull of rods to build, anyway.... :smash:

so here is a question that has been on my mind for a while.lets say i pick up a pole at a yard sale, and i'm pretty sure it's lamiglass, how would i determine what model it is? are there numbers stamped into it. same question goes for the newer blanks.

capesams 09-20-2002 08:09 PM

red,, on the new blanks there are numbers. some are up high on the blanks, some r covered up by the foam or cork tape. these are on blanks that some one has made,if nothing at all could b anyones guess as to what it maybe, here again if u can get it to a tackle shop that works on rods, they maybe able to take a good stab at it.
