Holographic/Laser finishes
On many of the Japanese wooden salt water plugs for Tuna/GT I have seen some awesome Holographic/Laser finishes. I am assuming they are some sort of film or foil applied to the plugs. Anyone know anything about these finishes? I'd love to try them.

Long time Fred, good to see you posting:wavey:

I think it is applied the same way you would apply gold leaf on fire trucks.
This site has some http://www.coastairbrush.com/products.asp?cat=270 I will try and find out were my friend got it to use on his flies he ties |

These are what got me thinking. These are wood! The shape is very close to what I've been using for years (liberally plageurized from Super Strike). However the metalic finish is at another level to anything I've seen. I've got plenty of turned , primed bodies ready to play with. Plus I think this finish on a 6" needle would be great for SBFT.
Andy, thanks, good to see you remember. |
Interesting. Glad to see you posting again.

Hi Fred, WOW another country heard from, good to see you on here.
That is some nice stuff but I have no idea how to get some. I wonder if WTP would have it. |
This is were my friend gets it. I hope this does not violate any rulles. I don't think any of the sponsors for the site have it.

If I can get this to work the way I think it will I will post pics. Probably mid spring if I can find foil. I've got the tuna Jones. So far 1 75# SBFT on one of my 5" needles!

The plastic they use on model airplane wings etc, is mono kote. I used it a few times to build some planes, red baron plane, and a piper cub :)
|
they sell irons intended for applying this stuff to surfaces. i've covered a few planes, and I don't know if you could do it without one of those irons. it could definitely be hit with the heat gun, but you need to apply a little pressure to get it to stick. you might be able to sorta finesse it on with a heat gun and a rag. u need to sorta rub it on somehow, and fingers are a little sticky for that. unless you got a tube of it, that i think i remember seeing somewhere.... then u might be able to shrink it on. But if it's a monokote tube, its not gonna shrink like shrink tubing... its a little less extreme. hope this is helpful?

I have had problems with E-Tex sticking to some paints like silver. I applied my E-tex (like I always do), everything looked good till I looked at it a half hour later. It wouldn't stick to that particular paint and my E-tex drooped on the spinner. Almost like it repelled the epoxy. I wonder how E-tex would adhere to these foils? They do look good. It's not like you'd be able to "scuff" them to get a clear coat to adhere.
|
I haven't used etex with the prismatic (only because I don't have it yet) but have done it on jigs with the aluminum foil ducktape used for heating ducts and there were no issues. Probably the biggest potential issue with the thin prismatic films is how they are adhered and possible separation from the lure body. Then again I'm not selling them so I'm not that concerned with durability. I will try the self adhering tape but really want a thin film that will shape to bodies like the polaris style popper. If I can do that I have some 5" Danny bodies that I need to finish/refinish as well.

not exactly what your looking for thin reflective film. But in the past I have user something fly tyers use. Silli Skin it comes in alll sorts of reflective colors etc, and has an adhesive backing. It runs about 5 dollars a piece of film though.
Thinking about it, they actually make a film. Fly guys use it to make crease flies, with a foam body. They spray a 3m adhesive to the foam body, and can then tranfer the reflective stuff from the film to the foam lure body, this seems more along the lines of what you are looking for. Try giving Pete a call at saltwater edge and tell him you need the reflective transfer film that is used to make crease flies. Sorry the product name escapes me at the moment. |
