Best line to use

I`m just starting the "basics" regarding surf casting, since I put the boat away.
I have 2 poles, one is a 9 1/2, that has a ( don`t laugh), South Bend 670A Long Cast, with a gear ratio of 4.6: 1.

The other pole is an 11 1/2, that has a ( I`m serious! :bl: ), Michell 386 ?
on it.

I`m guessing Braid would not be the best choice ? Mono ? What lb. would work best?

tattoobob 11-27-2007 07:01 PM

I would use big game 20 # test or ande' back country also 20 #test

20Lb. Ande Backcountry. Hands-down the best mono I've ever used.

Mike P 11-28-2007 02:30 PM

20# mono or 20# Fireline for the big Mitchell (Why the don't laugh? That's one hell of a good reel).

Keep the South Bend as a paperweight :yak6:

Pete F. 11-28-2007 07:03 PM

"modern" line I would say fireline
These guys know way more about mono than I do

Geez, by the "looks" of the South Bend, (very fancy red color, with "performance" numbers written all over it), I thought it would be the other way around

Mono-20lb Ande BackCountry.Period.

Braid-Don't care,don't use it.

fishbones 11-29-2007 10:30 PM

Dollar for dollar, I'd go with the Ande, too. I ended up fishing with a buddy's setup last year and he had his Penn 5500 spooled with it. I liked it so much I spooled 3 of my spinning reels with the 15 lb soon after and have stuck with it. I mostly throw plugs and change out my line pretty often. I find that I like it better than the more expensive mono I was using. I still have a couple of reels spooled with Yozuri hybrid 20lb which I also like.

Just a note. Bill Nolan (#^&#^&#^&#^&#^&#^&) turned me on to the Ande Backcountry about 3 years ago. Up until then it was hard to find. I used it in the surf and couldn't believe the abrasion resistance, the lack of memory and the suppleness of the line. I now use it on all my spinning reels on my boat.It is just the best mono available. I was a confirmed Big game mono guy before he told me about Backcountry. Try it.

I was using fireline on all my reels. I got tired of wind knots did not have many but always at the worst of times. I tried Backcountry 20#
for the fall run and I'm hooked. I also will be using it on all my spinning
gear

So there is a big difference between Big Game 20, and Ande ?
The tackle store didn`t have Ande, so I bought the other.
If it`s that good, I`ll use that, I don`t care

Interesting. Never thought of there for line

Finlander 11-30-2007 12:06 PM

Pro-Bass saltwater catlog has it.

basswipe 11-30-2007 06:24 PM

Saltwater Edge has BackCountry!

riverrat2 11-30-2007 06:32 PM

30# fireline on spinning. Unlike mono the fireline gets better with time.

dahark 11-30-2007 06:46 PM

Have any of you guys used Yo zuri Hybrid ultra soft? A lot of freshwater guys love it? If so how does it stack up to the Ande?

BC is better.

As far as comparing braid(fireline) to mono(BC)...no point. Two different species altogether.

The Yo-Zuri hybrid is a flourocarbon polymer line, whatever that means. I only use the 20 pound test and I don't think it says anything about ultra soft on the packaging. I like it because it has less stretch, is pretty abrasion resistant in the rocks and has a little less memory than mono. I haven't compared it to the 20 pound Ande, though. I use only the 15 lb Ande Back Country and have nothing but good things to say about it.

I think you are using Yo Zuri original. They have an Ultra soft line that is also a coplymer line and it is supposed to be not as stiff as the OG formula and more manageble, very abrasion resistant and very strong. I think the 6lb line is like 12 lb strength and 12 lb more like 20 strength. So its would mean longer casts without without giving up strength.. Like I said freshwater guys rave about it and dont see any reason it wouldnt be a good fit for saltwater. I might have to look into this Ande BC though:bl:

Mike P 12-01-2007 11:17 AM

As a general rule, softness and abrasion resistance are mutually exclusive terms with mono. I'd have to see this new Yozuri line in action before I'd accept their claims that it's both ;)

I know their Hybrid is stiff and wiry. I took it off my Newell 229 and put 25# BC on instead.

How's the Ande Backcountry on conventional reels?
